Historic Castles and Sights of the Rhine River

Image : http://www.flickr.com
The river Rhine, which runs through Germany, has been at the center of much of Europe’s history. It once marked the border of Rome’s empire, the easternmost edge of their domain. It was the famous Julius Caesar who brought the region on the western bank under Roman control. Beyond the river the Germanic peoples remained in control of their own lands. They did not remain there, however. Around the beginning of the 5th century AD these barbarian tribes challenged the failing Roman Empire and claimed large swathes of Europe for themselves, creating the state that would one day become Germany, as well as the Holy catholic Empire based in Rome.
The historic importance of the Rhine is marked by the presence of numerous castles along its length. They were built in dangerous times, by feudal lords with large numbers of people under their protection. While the fertile riverbanks were a blessing, and the river allowed goods and people to be transported, it also carried gangs of robbers and marauders along its length, sending the locals into the protection of the castles.
The river itself flows from the Swiss mountains, through several hundred miles of Germany, into the Netherlands and finally opening into the North Sea. The most popular stretch of the river for tourists lies between Koblenz and Bingen. The river here runs between the high cliffs of a spectacular gorge, where the greatest concentration of castles along its course- or on any river in the world- clusters high above the water. Some of these castles are now just dramatic ruins, while others can be toured or have even been developed into hotels. There are also many charming villages along the river that offer accommodation and facilities for tourists. A visit to Bacharach or St Goar will bring you into the heart of German life, and each of these quaint villages has its own castle where you can join a tour.
The Rhine region offers many chances to sample the local cuisine, but the most important thing for food lovers visiting the region will be to try some of the locally grown wine. The Rhine is the cradle of Germany’s best vineyards. Bingen, near the Mittelrhein wine region, is the ideal place to see where the wine is produced. The area is covered with vineyards, spread out between spectacular cliffs and magical castles.
The wine produced in this region is known for its full, rich flavor. Reisling grapes are the most commonly grown variety in the Rhine, although you will also find some more unusual ones here too. Researchers at the Geisenheim wine facility have developed numerous hybrid species, each with their own tastes and characters.
A river cruise is the best way to see this part of the river. It takes two hours to cruise between Bacharach and St Goar, with many interesting sights and magnificent castles to look out for on either side of the river. If you would prefer to get a bit closer to local life then there is also a convenient train service, with a line that links many of the smaller villages. It is possible to get out and explore at numerous spots along the way.
For even more freedom to discover unexpected sights along the Rhine, you can rent a car. The highway alongside the river offers some spectacular views, but you will also be able to explore further afield and get away from the main tourist routes. You will also find that walking or cycling along part or all of the route will be a rewarding experience, allowing you the chance to really appreciate some of the area’s natural beauty. There are ferries across the river for pedestrians and cyclists that will allow you to explore both banks.
One sight you should try and make the time to see is the famous Rock of Lorelei, which can be found at Saint Goarshausen. It is worth a visit just for the beautiful scenery alone, as the river passes through its narrowest, deepest section of the gorge. This is also the scene of a beloved German fairy tale. A statue of a beautiful nymph looks down across the river. Her name is Lorelei. She was believed to have lived here, luring numerous local fishermen into danger with her enchanting song. Eventually, however, she fell in love and ended up meeting the same fate as the fisherman, plunging to her death in the river below.

The Latin Influence on Spanish

Image : http://www.flickr.com
The Spanish language, like Italian and French, is called a Romance language. The reason being that it has a marked influence of Latin (Roman) language on its vocabulary like the other two languages mentioned above.
Since the country of Spain remained under Roman influence for many centuries to which they gave the name ” The Iberian Peninsula “, the Spanish language has borrowed heavily from the Latin. Following are a few examples which illustrated this point.
Water is called Agua in Spanish and Aqua in Latin. Spirit is called Alma in Spanish and Anima in Latin. The number one is called Uno in Spanish and unus in latin. Two is called dos in Spanish and duos in Spanish. Three is the same in both languages i.e Tres. Similarly the similarities in the days of the weeks are also striking. In Spanish Monday is called Lunes; in Latin Lunae. Tuesday is Martes in Spanish; in Latin Martis. Saturday is Sabado in Spanish; Sabbatum in Latin. If we move towards the months of the year, the same similarity awaits us. August is Agosto in Spanish and Agustus in Latin. October is Octubre in Spanish and October in Latin and so on.
Even in the tenses we find amazing similarities. For instance we in Spanish is Nosotros while in Latin it is nosalteros. They in Spanish is vosotros and in Latin it is vosalteros.
Thus from the above study we conclude that Spanish has borrowed heavily from Latin in terms of vocabulary as well as in grammar.

The History of California Wine

Image : http://www.flickr.com
California has a long and rich history of wine making. The wine industry marked its beginning in 1769, when the first grape vines were planted at Mission San Diego, by the Franciscan missionary Father Junipero Serra. This black-skinned grape variety, which was called Mission grape, played a significant role in California wine production until 1880.
In 1833, the first documented imported European wine vine of California was planted in Los Angeles by a French winemaker Jean-Louis Vignes. Later in the 1850s and ’60s, Agoston Harazsthy – a Hungarian soldier and merchant – imported original vine cuttings from around 165 European vineyards. Altogether, he introduced 300 different grape varietals in California.
Harazsthy made the most outstanding contribution to the development of the wine industry, which made him known as the “founder of California Wine Industry.” He founded the Buena Vista Winery, which can still be seen at Sonoma. Great efforts were made in promoting vine planting throughout North California. Moreover, he introduced the idea of non-irrigated vineyards and also constructed many caves for wine cellaring.
During the 1890s, most of the European vines were destroyed due to the attack of
Phylloxera – a destructive root louse. The attempts taken to eradicate the pest were mostly unsuccessful. Finally, Thomas V. Munson – who was regarded as the “father of Texas viticulture” – fostered the idea of grafting European wine vines onto American rootstocks.
California wine industry faced a major decline due to National Prohibition (1920 – 1933). The major portion of the industry, which initially had up to 713 bonded wineries, was wiped out during the prohibition. By the end of 1933, California wine industry managed to revive gradually. The common grape varieties of the time were Thompson seedless, Emperor, and Flame Tokay.
Today, the California wine industry is one among the finest in the world. It contributes to around 90% of total U.S. wine production. The industry boasts approximately 2,445 wineries, which produce more than 500 million gallons of wines every year. Chardonnay is the largest grown variety, followed by Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and White Zinfandel.
California Wine [http://www.e-CaliforniaWine.com] provides detailed information on California Wine, California Wine Tours, California Wine Country, California Wine Gift Baskets and more. California Wine is affiliated with California Wine Clubs.
