Hi there. Im shooting at 60 Yards here. Im trying to improve my loose here. The battery ran out on the camera yet again so only got one longbow vid. Im not gonna shoot another vid for a couple of weeks. Hopefully my form with improve. By the way feel free to give me some tips. Im a target shooter, I dont shoot clout or anything so if you can give out any advice it would be welcome.

The options for bows, arrows and the associated gear for bow hunting deer today has progressed by leaps and bounds from the time archery was first discovered.

The history of wooden bows and arrows covers more than 15,000 years of recorded history. Our ancestors discovered how to make these weapons, and over the millennia changed and modified them for use in both acquiring game and battling their fellow man. And the arrow heads or tips have evolved as well. There are numerous options available, each geared for the type of game and the use the archer intends to put them to. Heads are specially made for target shooting, small game hunting and for for big game or larger game. Broadhead styles themselves now are available in an uncountable number of types, each with its own advantages or disadvantages for the intended use.

When you are looking for a new bow, especially for hunting bigger game, the first consideration is the draw weight of the bow. This is the amount of power you have to provide to draw back and hold before shooting. While most modern compound bows can be set to really reduce the amount it takes to hold the drawn bow, the overall draw weight is still your primary consideration.

Also consider the weight and style of the bow. The heavier it is, the harder to carry during a long day in the woods. And shorter more compact bows are easier to maneuver. If you will be using a compound bow, the draw length of the bow needs to fit to your physical size.

If you want to get started finding your first bow, research resources abound on the internet. There are many bow hunting forums where you can pick up great information. There are also pro shops for bow hunting and some of the larger sporting goods stores offer help in picking and sizing the right bow for you. Many of the pro shops also have indoor archery ranges where you can try out your bow before you buy.

Bow hunting deer is sometimes extremely challenging, but learning and mastering it is an excellent experience and very rewarding. Take your first steps now on your journey to master this sport.

Archery is both the skill and the practice of using a bow to shoot arrows and hit a target. These days, it is a renowned sport of precision and accuracy but this skill dates back to early history as a tool for hunting and a weapon in conflict. Archery was seen in the histories of the different cultures all over the continents, all except Australia.

The initial evidence of archery is the “tya,” which is a bow that was probably used for hunting and was later turned into a weapon for combat. These bows ultimately took over the use of the “spear-thrower” as the main tool for launching projectiles. The spear thrower launches projectiles by using leverage to gain a greater velocity. It is made of a shaft with a hook where the end of the spear rests and is thrown by the movement of the upper arm and wrist.

The use of Archery in hunting is more commonly called Bow Hunting. In our modern society, hunting is no longer our main source of food and livelihood. This is because we can buy food and almost anything in shops and grocery stores. In this day and age, hunting is considered as a sport, calling the kill ‘game.’ And, as in all sports, hunting is regulated by a lot of rules and regulations. Some people also target fish and use modified bows. This is called bow fishing.

In North America, for example, regulations for bow hunting concern the hunting unit, which means the location of the hunt; the season, pertaining to the particular time; and what type (male or female) of animal species can be hunted down. Most of the time, Bow hunters are given a special season to hunt so that conflict with rifle hunters are kept at a minimum. Also, there are technical regulations in the hunt such as the minimum draw weight that is applied to the hunting of big game species. This is to maximize shot lethality and game recovery.

Bow hunters are different from rifle hunters because rifles can shoot from a range of more than 200 meters away. A good archer is careful and will restrict his shots to less than 60 meters, taking into consideration several factors such as the archer’s ability, the draw weight regulated and the target animal among others. Good bow hunters also choose to restrict their shooting range and prefer to shoot from a shorter distance. This is to make sure that the target is killed swiftly, humanely and with as little arrows as possible. Shooting from a closer distance allows the hunter a far more personal hunting experience because they get to test the target’s senses of sight, hearing and smell as well as their own. This limit in range is a huge challenge for the hunter and is one of the main reasons why archery hunting is a very striking sport.

As with weapons of war, there are a lot of types of bows that an archer can choose from. Traditional bows like the self bows, the longbows and recurve bows are able to accurately launch their arrows from a distance more than 20 yards but they shoot best when shot from a range of less than 20 meters. Nowadays, compound bows are usually preferred by bow hunters but seeing hunters with recurve bows are also common and legal in North America.

The favorite though is still the longbow because most hunters prefer to make the whole hunting experience as traditional as possible. However, more skill is needed to manipulate a longbow and achieve a clean hit than with other types of bows. Crossbows are generally used by the disabled hunters but its use by able hunters has been allowed in several states in 2005.

True to any weapon, proper training, skill and practice of the archer are needed to be able to bring out the best in a bow and hit a bull’s eye. Even more will be required to take down an animal target cleanly, humanely and with one shot if possible. An excellent archer can kill with one well-placed shot as efficiently as a hunter with a rifle.

In general, archery bows are divided into four classifications: recurve bows, compound bows, longbows and crossbows. The longbows are used for traditional archery. Crossbows are much shorter and are mounted on a rifle-like stock to enable the shooter to cock and shoot its arrow. Cams and pulleys, on the other hand, are the main features of the compound bows. Archery can be used to hunt game wherein crossbows and compound bows (for large animals) are the common equipment. In bowhunting, the distance between the hunter and the game is much shorter than that in hunting using firearms, and hunting with these bows enjoys longer seasons.

Archery as sports competitions has several variations some of which could be held both outdoors and indoors. One is target archery which is an Olympic sport with its own international governing body, FITA. Indoor events here have distances of 18m and 25m while outdoor distances are set at 30m to 90m.

Also popular in the US and Europe is field archery wherein competitors shoot at targets situated on varying distances usually over rough terrain. There are three common rounds in field archery: field, animal and hunter with each round consisting of 28 targets broken into two units of 14.

Also popular in international archery bows competition, particularly among hunters, is a form called 3D archery which revolves around shooting at life-size models of animals. Another competition is called clout archery which is similar to target archery but the distances are considerably longer to up to 165m for men and 128m for women. Crossbow target shooting is yet another archery event with international following. Three disciplines are involved here: field-crossbow archery, 30m match-crossbow, 10m match-crossbow.

After lining up the archery bows that may be suited for a specific activity, a user can then pick one which is the most comfortable for the individual’s intended use. It is worth considering also that a release aid would be required for short bows, while none is needed in long bows.

Next consideration is the weight of the equipment. Light bows would be ideal for hunting as these will have to be carried around for longer periods of time. The heavier bows would be more suitable for archery competitions as these are more stable for shooting immobile targets.

Brace height, the distance between the bow grip and string, should likewise be as comfortable as possible for the individual. Most importantly, archery bows have to have the appropriate draw weight. The comfortable draw for adults would be at 50 pounds, 10 pounds for young kids and 20 pounds for older children. Draw weight, in other words, has to be compatible to an archer’s pulling power; draw weights that are too high for comfort could tire the competitor early and shots taken are most likely to be inaccurate. In the same manner, archery bows have to be of appropriate draw length, as muscle strain would result from draw lengths that are too long, again resulting in shot inaccuracy.

Clearly, there is much to consider when purchasing archery bows. Essentially, sound advice is needed as the archery bow should exactly fit the type of activity for its intended use, as well as match the individual capability of the user.
