Nowadays, embellished quilts are the ‘in-thing’. Embellished quilts look very trendy and we can experiment with a variety of options with which to decorate the quilts. The primary objective of a good quilt is to keep us warm in bed. But many families use quilts also to celebrate different events of our life like weddings, birth of a baby, Christmas and other festivals and events. Many are used simply for decorations.

There are two important ways to guarantee that an embellished quilt is attractive to the eye. First and foremost, the quilt making has to be technically sound. If it is not constructed well, no matter how much we adorn it, the quilt will not look good and will wear out. Second, we must keep in mind that the accessories not only make the quilt attractive but also add weight to it. Thus the foundation fabric or the fabric with which the quilt has been constructed, must be strong enough to support the embellishments.

Lace, Ribbon, Beads or Paillettes, and Other Embellishments

The list of potential quilt embellishments is limited only by your unique creativity. Following are just a few of them:

o Paillettes – These are small, circular pieces of luminous metal or plastic sewn on garments for decoration. They shine wonderfully when they catch light or sunlight. They can be used to decorate clothes, handbags and accessories. They are also great accompaniments for crafts such as frames, jewelry, lamps, and more. They are also fashionable as a knit, crochet and quilt embellishment.

o Beads – Beads can be used to add visual appeal. They can be attached anywhere while adorning the quilt top or block and/or after the quilt sandwich has been created. We can attach the beads to the top coating or through the top layer and batting or through all three layers after creating the quilt sandwich.

o Buttons – Buttons can be sewed on in small clusters to enhance the appeal of a plain area. Buttons stitched onto folded ribbon or embroidery can also go a long way in making your quilt look exciting.

o Charms – Charms have gained tremendous popularity and can be found in discount stores, jewelry stores, flea markets, garage sales, and all over.

o Doilies – Doilies and other specks crochet can plug a plain shape marvelously.

o Embroidery – Embroidery can be done with the help of floss or silk ribbon. They go a long way in adding a delicate touch to the quilt. We can also use French knots for consistency and use outline stitches to characterize the edges of an area, which might need more focus.

o Lace – Lace can be added in numerous ways. It can either be stitched on flat or assembled to give it a full, more three-dimensional look. Lace can also be used in a pieced seam or inserted under the rim of an appliqué patch. We can even be fasten it on top of a seam to conceal it. Lace can successfully set up a contrast of texture yet is light and appealing to sew. Embellishment used on top of a lace such as stitching or beading areas intensifies the visual texture. o Ribbon – Ribbons can be added in the shape of streamers and bows.

However, we must remember that the heavier the embellishment we use, the more quilting is required to prevent it from sagging. If the quilting is not done with care, the quilts will not lie flat. If heavy embellishment is used, hand quilting may makes for a better quilt to avoid ruining the embellishments with machine quilting. Or, for the safety of the embellishments, the quilt, and the machine, machine quilt first, then embellish.

All quilts have batting except one. It is known as the crazy quilt. This is a party quilt; free and wild stitchery fun. It follows no rules and it hears a different drummer. It has a passionate rhythm seeking the artist within you. Have you made a crazy quilt?

The crazy quilt historically seemed to reveal financial status success and leisure. The fabrics used were silks, velvets, and favorite clothing fabrics of the times. The crazy quilt was used primarily as decorative art as furniture throw, a table top, a piano cover or a wall hanging.

Embroidery stitchery was used to insert special occasions with dates, initials or names of loved ones and to decorate exposed seams and errors. Much embroidery is the mark of a crazy quilt. The women of earlier years took months to hand stitch; we can make the same quilting project in a matter of hours. We can machine stitch or hand stitch a copy of a pattern from the eighteenth century or we can create our own design.

Imagine what it would be like sewing a crazy quilt into a great family wall hanging of important moments. Combine scraps of fabric from first baby, birthdays, weddings, school events, sport events, dance events, and many other occasions. Photos can be inserted. Special buttons, pendants, military medals, and pieces of jewelry or ribbons or chains, etc.

Use your imagination to make clothing accessories of neck collars, hats, belts, scarves, jewelry, and vests. Use all the colors you enjoy; subdued or loud and bold. Use all types of fabrics to create an assortment of textures and interests.

Start piece construction of the crazy quilt to a foundation fabric of muslin or cotton. There is no batting on completion. The foundation piece can be one large square or a combination of squares that have been sewn together to form one large foundation square. The completed foundation is utilized as front and back.

You are painting a canvas. Do as you please. Place the different cuts of fabric where you wish, then embroider your seams and cover errors or rough edges with applique and more fancy stitching of choice. Then go crazy with embellishing.

How to Create a Strip Quilt

As was mentioned before, you will first need long strips of fabric. You can easily make your own by cutting the fabric with a rotary cutter and using the ruler for a guide. Make sure that the height or width of each piece is exactly the same. The length of the strip can be uniform, but you can also make them different lengths. It’s up to you. The more fabric designs you have, the better. If you like, you can start with one fabric for your strip quilting until you become accustomed to the technique.

The next step, after the strips have been cut, will be for you to gather them together and lay the long strips end to end until you achieve the desired width for your quilt. You will now sew the strips together to create a longer strip. For this strip quilting method, you will need quite a few long strips. Cut as many you feel will be necessary to achieve the correct length you desire.

The next step in the strip quilting method will be for you to sew the long strips together. Note that you will not sew them end to end, but will sew them side to side. Continue sewing these together until your top piece reaches length you are wanting. Trim any sides that may hang over the edge. You have now completed your first strip quilting top piece.

Simple and Easy

The strip quilting technique is quite simple to create and it achieves a beautiful design for your quilting project. By using a ruler and rotary cutter, you can be assured of straight and even strips. Only two steps are needed for this strip quilting technique. You will first need to sew the strips end to end and then sew the larger strips you have made side to side. This is continued until you have achieved the desired length and width. With this design, you can choose to use many designed fabrics or just one. This is great for either beginners or advanced quilters. Without question, strip quilting is one of the easiest and prettiest ways to quilt!

I absolutely love Rag Quilting! It is such an easy and unique way to put a quilt together fast! The one in the picture to the left is a twin quilt I finished in one weekend using 7″ squares.

Here is how to start.

1. Chose the size blocks you would to begin with…of course the larger the blocks the quicker the quilt will go. For sanity sake, I suggest going with a minimum of 5″ blocks.

2. Chose your fabrics. You will want to chose fabrics that fray nicely. Cotton Fabrics work well with using a color coordinated flannel middle, but ultimately flannel is the best fraying fabric. Another great choice is to toss some denim in, denim looks great in any rag quilt.

I personally like using at least five different fabrics to get a nice diagonal pattern going, but you can use as little as two or as many as 50. (these do make great scrap quilts to clean up the stash) The quilt above has seven different prints and just for fun I threw in a textured corduroy. For the backing you can pick anything to mixed up squares or the same fabric. I am pretty conservative and usually go with the same backing through out the quilt.

3. Chose your middle fabric or batting(if any at all). If you are using two cottons for the front and back; you really do want to consider a middle(or a sandwich fabric as I like to call it). With cottons I usually go with Quilters Dream Request, which is a low loft batting. You may also decide to go with a color matching flannel middle.

If you are using a cotton front and flannel back….unless you want a puffy quilt you can forgo the middle. If the top is flannel and back is flannel you definitely will not need anything in the middle.

My best advise is to make a couple of blocks and decide for yourself.

4. After you have made all of these important decisions…step four is to simply cut all of your blocks the size you want them(front, back, and middle(if needed). All blocks need to be cut the same size.

5. Now it is time to start putting it all together. What I do is line up the blocks in the order I want and start making a sandwich with all the fabrics I plan on using.

6. Then you need to quilt the squares one by one. You can chose whatever pattern you like. I usually do a simple X pattern but you can chose anything. Hearts are cute but need to be chalked out. Try to leave a 1″ seam allowance around the edges while doing this. If you do not you will want to pick it out with a seam ripper prior to putting the squares together.

7. Next comes the fun part…putting it all together. Here is where I organize before starting…I lay the quilt out on the floor in the design I want, then stack them in rows in the order they are going to be sewn. As I stack I label the rows with post-it notes.

Throughout the whole quilt you will want to use a 1″ seam allowance, this is very important to get the optimal fray. I pick up two blocks from row one and with the backing together and the front of the quilt facing the ceiling and the other front facing the bottom of the sewing machine I start assembling my rows. After I have sewn all the rows together I again lay the quilt out to make sure everything looks good.

Then I take each row over to the ironing board and iron the seams open. and set the rows back on the floor.

Then I pin the rows at the seams two rows at a time. Again you will want to make sure you are putting the backing sides together as you want the frayed look on the front of your quilt. After I have assembled all of the rows in twos, I start the process over by pinning the rows of twos. It is very important to pin as you will find these quilts can get very heavy quick.

8. After all of the rows are assembled and all of the seems pressed open, you will want to sew a 1 inch seam around the entire quilt.

9. Now comes the fraying and probably the most time consuming part of the process. I really suggest using spring loaded scissors. It really will be a lot easier and less stress on your hand. You will want to start fraying the quilt by cutting in 1/4″ to 3/8″ lines as close to your seam as possible, but be careful not to snip past the seam. Don’t forget to do the outer edges.

10. After you have finished cutting the entire quilt go ahead and toss it in the washing machine. This will be a little messy for your machine and you will want to wipe it out with a paper towel afterwards as you will have clumps of fabric in the machine. Then toss it in the dryer. After the dryer you will have a nice warm and fluffy rag quilt. The more you wash it the more it will fray and look gorgeous!

Rag Quilt tip: After removing from the dryer if you are using dark or light fabrics you may see lint all over the quilt. My magic cure is duck tape. I take pieces of duck tape and use it as a lint remover….works like magic!

If you have recently learned to sew and are looking for an easy baby quilt to make for a gift for someone else or for your own child, there is a very simple quilt that you can make. While it is simple in concept, it will be sure to steal the show at the baby shower and will be enjoyed by all who see it or use it.

Before you make the quilt, you need to decide on how you want the quilt to be used. Is it going to go in the nursery to match the baby bedding? Do you want it to be used for a pallet when the baby is napping? Is it more of a play quilt that will be used to stimulate the baby’s senses or hold the baby’s toys while they play? The answer to these questions will dictate what kind of quilt material you are going to use from soft pastels to vibrant primary colors.

Once you decide on the purpose of the quilt, it is time to go fabric shopping. Go to your local fabric store and choose two coordinating fabrics, batting and coordinating thread. You will need approximately 1 ¼ yard of each so that they can be cut down to make two large squares. Wash the fabric before you do anything else.

After the fabric is washed and ironed, cut both pieces into same size squares. Place one piece of fabric right side down on the floor. Put the batting down next. Place the second piece of fabric on top of the batting right side up. Pin the fabric and batting together starting from the center and working out. Using a quilter’s pencil and a straight edge, draw a diagonal line connecting opposite corners so that you have two diagonal lines that make an X. Sew along these lines. Decide which fabric you want to be the top and which to be the bottom. Fold the bottom fabric over the top, folding twice, making a ¼” fold. Sew on the fold the whole way around.

At this point you are done and have a cute, simple baby quilt. You can choose to add other things to your quilt such as an appliqué to the top or tying the top and bottom of the quilt together with yarn in different spots. Do whatever you want to do to make the quilt unique. Since it is a baby quilt, don’t add embellishments such as buttons that could come off. This fun, easy project can be completed in about 5 hours or less depending on your sewing ability and what additional items you add to the quilt. Now it’s time for you to go pick your fabric and get started.

They also usually include a few different stitches, so you can choose what stitch you want for different parts of your quilt.

Many of these “quilting sewing machines” are very expensive. We’re talking about over $1,000 each. Do they do a good job? Of course they do. But do you need them? That’s where I would have to say no. In order to make a really nice quilt, of course you want a decent sewing machine. But the truth of the matter is, you don’t need a very fancy one. Even many of the sewing machines that you can buy now that are around $100 or less come with many amazing features. You can get one that will have 60 different stitches to choose from for under one hundred dollars. Why would you want to spend ten times that amount because the machine is calling a quilting sewing machine?

The truth is the point of a sewing machine is to quickly and easily sew pieces of fabric together. This is true whether it is for a quilt, clothes, or anything else. So if you have many choices for stitches, you should be set. So personally, I think you are better off getting a decent sewing machine for your quilting than getting a specific quilting sewing machine. You will still be very happy with your purchase, and can then use the money you saved to start buying fabrics to make your quilts with!

One of the joys of quilting is being able to spend your craft time doing various styles or types of quilts. You may have noticed that stained glass quilts are growing in popularity. These look complex to create but following some simple guidelines will have you mastering this part of quilting in no time!

You will need to select your pattern for the project. It is best to actually use a pattern that is specifically for stained glass quilts for beginners. There are many different types and colors of fabrics to select from when making stained glass quilts. It is best to use fabrics that do not have fine details and patterns within them since you want the finished product to look like a piece of stained glass. Many people find that Muslin fabrics work well for the foundation fabric.

Once you’ve selected the pattern, increase the design size by 150% on a copier. Position the stained glass pattern in the middle of a 10″ x 8″ piece of woven fusible interfacing. It is best to avoid the fusible web because it can tend to make your project too stiff. Trace just the design without the numbers onto the fusible area of the interfacing.

Get a large piece of wax or freezer paper that will fit the design. Trace the design onto the paper, again without numbers. Using sharp scissors, you will need to cut the design out following the lines you just traced onto the paper.

Place all the appropriate freezer paper pieces on the different color fabrics. Make sure to place with the shiny side of the paper down. Iron the sections onto the fabric. Make sure your iron does not burn the fabrics. You will then need to cut the design pieces out leaving a 1/16″ additional edge border around each piece. Don’t cut the pieces flush or you will not have enough lead fabric and overlay fabric.

Now that all your pieces are cut, you will need to remove the paper backing. Place the patches on the fusible area of the interfacing. You will want to use the traced out lines for positioning. Partly overlie the appliqué sections a little. You do not want to leave any openings to have better looking stained glass quilts. Once this is complete, you will use a pressing sheet to iron the appliqué sections to the interfacing. Make sure to check the manufacturer’s instructions when doing this part of the process for this part of your stained glass quilts.

Set the pieces out and pin them onto the foundation fabric. It is recommended to baste around these so that the pieces will not shift when you sew on the bias tape later. You will now to stitch down the edges with bias tape so that the edges of the bias tape are completely covered with the other sections that are laid down. You will want to use thread that matches the bias tape. Use the backstitch to lock the starting and ending portions of the bias tape. Be certain to trim the thread ends close to the surface for a neater appearance on your stained glass quilts.

You are almost completed with your project. Cut away the extra foundation fabric and continue to add the other pieces. A nice addition is to add additional bias to the border pieces. With stained glass quilts, you will have leading at any area the glass is a different color or piece. It is important to quilt on both areas for the bias leading in order to make the leading extra noticeable.

Quilting a blanket can be a big project. You have a lot of choosing, cutting, and sewing to do. There are different ways to quilt a blanket, some that can be time consuming. Here I will tell you how to quilt a blanket quickly and easily. You quilt a blanket for the satisfaction of finishing a beautiful craft. Why should it be hard and time consuming?

First, you will need to pick a pattern. In order to make it a simple as possible, search for a simple pattern. If you use a simple block pattern, you will cut back on a lot of work. Now you will need to choose and buy fabric. You can buy precut squares that will cut back on a lot of time and work. They usually come with patterns as a kit, too, which makes it even easier.

If you don’t have a sewing machine, you have a lot of work to do. Now you need to cut your squares. If you bough precut squares, you are in luck because you can skip this step. Make sure you measure your squares very carefully. If they are off, even by a little, your quilt will not come together correctly. You might not even realize it until you get halfway done with your quilt.
