Universe, Energy & SETI Friday November 30th, 2007 Coast to Coast AM Theoretical physicist Dr. Michio Kaku joined Art Bell for a discussion on a variety of topics, including dark matter, alternative energy, and the SETI program. Kaku described the universe as “overwhelmingly dark,” noting that dark matter makes up about 73% of the total matter/energy content of the universe and is increasing. As this “runaway mode” continues, the stars will move farther apart until Earth’s night sky appears completely dark. Trillions of years from now, Kaku speculated, we will likely freeze to death here unless we can travel to a younger parallel universe. Kaku commented on the automobile industry, plug-in hybrid and fuel cell cars, as well as alternative energy sources. He believes a hydrogen economy will be viable when the rising price of oil meets with the falling price of solar/hydrogen power. Kaku also discussed global warming doomsday scenarios, the dangers of nuclear (fission) power plants, and the potential of ‘hot’ fusion reactors, which he imagines could be operational by 2030. Regarding SETI (Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence), Kaku expressed excitement over the new Allen Telescope Array, built in part by money donated by billionaire Paul Allen. The planned 350-dish array will increase search scans by a factor of 1000, he explained. What are you really getting when you buy a HEPA air purifier? Why do prices of room air purifiers claiming to have HEPA filters range from under $100 to well over $1000? If all HEPA filters perform equally as the advertising indicates how could you go wrong buying a cheap air purifier?

Demand for home air cleaners reaches millions of units each year. This demand puts manufacturers under pressure to lower costs. Affordable air cleaners are certainly welcome, but many are disappointed because they aren’t getting the performance they expect.

Even the HEPA air purifier, that Titan of the air cleaning industry, is not immune to performance robbing, cost cutting measures. But ultimately it is YOU who are being robbed.

What do you need to know as a consumer to determine when a HEPA air purifier is not really going to deliver HEPA performance?

The Difference Between Theoretical HEPA Efficiency And Actual System Efficiency

Due to exceptional high efficiency and reliability, HEPA filters are being incorporated into room air purifiers to convey high performance to the mind of the consumer. What most of these HEPA air purifier manufacturers fail to tell you is their air purifiers achieve nowhere near the efficiency of HEPA filtration.

HEPA air purifier ads often state 99.97% filtration efficiency for particles 0.3 micron and larger. However, the actual system efficiency for many HEPA filter air purifiers on the market is less than 80%. The 99.97% efficiency rating refers to the theoretical efficiency rating of the HEPA filter media. It doesn’t refer to the filter as a whole or the air purifier in which it is used.

There are four basic reasons why your HEPA air purifier suffers this performance loss:

True HEPA filter media is not used. You can recognize this cost cutting gimmick by the Orwellian corporate marketing speak. Instead of just saying HEPA, they append any number of cute prefixes and suffixes to the HEPA term. Look out for HEPA-type, Micro-HEPA, Ultra-HEPA, HEPA-style or other similar variations. The term True HEPA was created to counter this foolishness.

The HEPA media is cracked by the pleating process. Quick and dirty saves the day in corporate America. If you have a job, you understand. Unfortunately, fast and furious is not how you build a good HEPA filter. Look for a HEPA air purifier with filters that have been warm rolled or otherwise clearly explain they have been certified free of cracks.

There is leakage between the pleated HEPA filter pack and the filter frame. Look for a HEPA air purifier that uses a filter incorporating spacers to rigidly hold the pleats evenly in place and also indicates a firm seal.

There is leakage between the HEPA filter frame and the air cleaner housing. The filter needs to seat firmly against the housing with no gaps. This is hard to do in a soft plastic cheap air purifier. Some air purifiers deliberately bypass to take the load off and cool a cheap motor that wouldn’t withstand the back-pressure of a true HEPA filter.

Ten Top Air Purifiers That Deliver

Very few manufacturers reveal the actual system efficiency of their air cleaner. Fewer still guarantee and certify that efficiency in their HEPA air purifier.

That’s one of many reasons I so highly recommend the IQAir air purifiers. They actually test each and every one before it leaves the factory and send you the system efficiency certification. That way you know exactly what you’re getting. They are also one of the few to actually come realistically close to achieving system efficiency near the theoretical HEPA filter efficiency.
