The Benefits of an Air Purifier
Having an air purifier is very essential for your health. The problem of air pollution is real and variants of air pollutants are constantly evolving. The goal to preserve clean air begins with having proper knowledge about what air pollutants do to your body and how a purifier can be beneficial to your health.
Exposure to Air Pollutants
Even at the confines of your home, air is no longer safe to breathe in. Pollutants are brought inside the home in two major ways – by the natural presence and production of dust, pollen, mites, dander from animals, allergens and other airborne particles; and by artificially created pollution which includes common cleaning materials found in the house, like aerosol, disinfectants, deodorizers.
Threat is increased with your exposure to more harmful air toxins outdoors. This could come from paint, tobacco smoke, carbon dioxide from burning fuel, nitrogen oxide from automobile engines, industrial by-products and other hazardous chemicals present in the atmosphere.
Once air pollutants envelope your breathing space, it becomes active and dangerous to your body. Prolonged exposure leads to the development of several health problems, from having mild episodes of allergic reactions, colds and flu down to more serious chronic respiratory problems. Lung cancer and other cardiovascular diseases can be attributed to air pollution. Toddlers and the elderly have higher chances of being affected due to the frailty of their immune system.
Key Benefits of Air Purifiers
1. Air purifiers prevent many health problems. When you sleep, your body partly shuts down to rest. This is a vulnerable time and an opportunity for allergens and harmful substances to penetrate it. Air cleaners that are placed in several essential areas of the home are more effective in filtering out air pollution. Sleeping and dining room areas are among the two most important sections you need to prioritize.
2. An air purifier traps impurities in a systematic manner, targeting airborne particles circulating in the atmosphere and holding on to it. A HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filter functions this way. These filters remove up to 99.7% of airborne particles as little as 0.3 micron in diameter. This prevents the worsening of asthma, allergies and other respiratory conditions.
3. Air purifiers help in giving you a longer life span. The effects of pollutants linger in the atmosphere for many months and even years. The continuous working action of air filters at home, in the workplace and other public and private facilities will continually provide the most protection for your health.
The problem of air pollution is worsening and our body needs all the help to fight these impurities. Air purifiers are a simple, cost-efficient and readily available solution to keep our environment pollution-free.

Wood-Burning Fireplaces & Air Pollution
Wood-burning fireplaces are becoming more popular. There’s something romantic and relaxing about sitting near a fireplace, hearing the crackle of the wood, and gazing at the flickering flames. And with soaring fossil fuel prices, many people believe that it’s less expensive to burn wood for heat during the winter. But research shows that central heating is typically the most efficient and cheapest way to heat. Many people also think that burning wood is better for the environment since wood is a renewable resource; however, according the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), wood burning is not environmentally friendly. In fact, wood results in high levels of air pollution that can harm the environment and your health.
“The largest single source of outdoor fine particles entering into our homes in many American cities is our neighbor’s fireplace or wood stove,” says Dr. Wayne Ott of Stanford University.
Wood smoke contains many of the same chemicals as cigarette smoke, including carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, hazardous metals, and known carcinogens such as formaldehyde, dioxin, benzene, and toluene. Inhaling wood smoke appears to be even more dangerous than inhaling tobacco smoke. An EPA study concluded that breathing wood smoke particles during high pollution days is equivalent to smoking 4 to 16 cigarettes. Medical studies have linked air pollution with lung cancer, heart attacks, strokes, high blood pressure, congenital heart defects, asthma, and even brain damage. People most at-risk for damage from air pollution include asthma sufferers, diabetics, those with congenital hearth failure, and children.
Dr. Ramierez-Venegas of the UK explains, “Biomass [wood] smoke is composed of a relatively equal mixture of coarse and ultra-fine particles and can penetrate deeply into the lung, producing a variety of morphologic and biochemical changes.”
“Mammalian lungs don’t have defenses against small particles,” points out Joel Schwartz of the EPA. “Particulate pollution is the most important contaminant in our air… We know that when particle levels go up, people die.”
Of course, it’s best to avoid burning wood (for the benefit of your family, your neighbors, and the environment), but if you must, you can take steps to limit your exposure to the air pollution. Make sure your fireplace is working properly with a sufficient draft. Tightly sealed doors in front of the fireplace block out much pollution. Don’t burn trash or treated wood, and make sure your wood has been split and dried for at least six months. Use small pieces of wood. Small, hot fires give off less pollution than smoldering fires.
Many air purifiers are specifically designed to handle the air pollution from smoke. Blueair air purifiers are available with SmokeStop Filters. The AllerAir 5000 DS air purifier is designed to absorb smoke, tar, fine ash, and other airborne particulates, and the IQAir Multigas air purifier removes a wide spectrum of gases and particulates, including smoke. If you want to get rid of the odor from smoke, try the Gonzo Smoke Odor Eliminator.

Get the Best Air Purifier – Focus on Your Real Needs First
What do you think? How can you get the best air purifier for yourself and your family? Should you trust your brother-in-law who knows everything? Should you buy the same one I chose, an Allerair 5000 MCS? Or is it the one that best suits your circumstances, your health needs and your budget?
Unfortunately, many consumers buy air purifiers based upon well intentioned but misguided advice because they don’t understand what they really need. Do you have a clear idea of what you need? Most people who buy air purifiers expect a health benefit. But what level of performance is needed to deliver a real health benefit?
Consider this, particles in the 2.5 to 10 micron range are usually trapped in your nose and throat causing sinus irritation and allergies. If what you need is an air purifier for allergies then how effectively will your air purifier remove these particles? How many times will it cycle your room air each hour? A minimum of four air changes is best.
Particles smaller than 2.5 micron, especially smaller than 0.1 micron, are lung penetrating particles. These are the most damaging of all and are a serious health threat for everyone but especially people with asthma, COPD, emphysema, MCS or other breathing ailments.
The smallest of these particles can cross through lung membranes into the blood stream and act as toxins systemically. Particles in this size range are linked to increased heart disease, heart attack and stroke. If your health concerns are greater than simple allergies then your best air purifier is one with a demonstrated ability to remove ultra-fine particulates. While many air purifiers remove larger allergenic particles they may be poor performers at removing these smaller, more dangerous particles.
The idea that there is a single best air purifier for everyone is a myth. Every air purifier is an exercise in balancing competing demands. You must choose the best air purifier for your needs based on the balance you wish to strike.
Certain air purifiers give you very high air flow but may sacrifice gas and odor removal to accomplish it. Some tackle odors exceptionally well but the dense activated carbon filter reduces the total air flow. Others balance both needs but at a greater cost and usually more noise because of a more powerful fan. Some air purifiers perform acceptably well and at a reasonable price but without extras you may want.
Once you have a clear health goal in mind you can begin to rate air purifiers as to how well they meet your need and how much value they deliver for your budget. Two resources I have found very helpful are (achoo!) Allergy.com and AllergyBuyersClub.com.

Smart Shoppers Air Purifier Rating Cheat Sheet
If you want something done right, do it yourself! Nothing could be truer when rating air purifier performance. Trustworthy reviews are scarcer than Dodo birds. So here is a ten point checklist to help you do your own air purifier rating.
#1 Determine the Type of Air Purifier
This is simple enough. There are six types widely marketed as air cleaners. Here is the bottom line:
HEPA uses a specialized filter capable of removing particulates down to .01 micron. This includes mechanically or chemically produced dusts and mists, biologically produced allergens and pathogens like bacteria and viruses. The 0.3 micron size often stated in ads refers to the Most Penetrating Particle Size. It only allows a mere three in ten thousand of these particles through.
HEPA Type: Maybe as good as 95% HEPA performance, maybe as bad as 50%. Who knows? Real data is hard to find. If you don’t know what you’re getting, why buy? Steer clear of anything labeled something-HEPA or HEPA-something.
Electret Type Electrostatically Charged Fibers make the best furnace filters you can buy. When used in an air purifier, like the 3M Ultra Clean, they do a good job. Unfortunately effectiveness declines steadily and they should be replaced every three months. A low initial cost is offset by filter replacements over the life of the unit. Good for allergies but compare lifetime cost against the better HEPA units.
Electrostatic Precipitators: Initial efficiencies lie in the 50% to 80% range, similar to HEPA-type filters. Unfortunately plate loading can reduce efficiency by as much as 80% in as few as three days. Regular maintenance cleaning is a must. Ozone is produced, often at dangerous levels. Avoid them.
Ionizers use high voltage to electrically charge particles causing them to “static cling” to something. Unfortunately they cling to walls and furniture producing the dreaded “black wall effect.” The EPA thinks they may also cling to your lungs. Avoid them.
Ozone Generators are banned in Canada, all but banned in California, and are very much discouraged by agencies like the EPA. Ozone sickens and kills. Reject utterly.
#2 Size Matters When It Comes To The Filter
More filter surface means less resistance to air flow, thus more air flow. More particles are captured with each pass. Room air is cleaned faster. The filter lasts longer before replacement.
#3 Total System Efficiency
Just because it has a HEPA filter doesn’t mean its nearly 100% efficient. Some air purifiers bypass air to help reduce backpressure and cool the motor. Some leak like sieves due to poor construction. Any air not going through the filter is air not being cleaned. Look for an air purifier proud to verify total system efficiency like the IQAir HealthPro series.
#4 Air Changes per Hour
For greatest health benefits you need 4 to 6 air changes per hour. This should be measured on some speed other than high. High is always the noisiest speed. So unless you’re fine with the sound of a hurricane in your home, find one that exchanges the air sufficiently at a lower speed.
#5 Filter Costs
Air purifiers with separate pre-filters, main filter and gas phase carbon filter usually cost less in the long run than those with fully integrated filter systems. Long filter life will also reduce your long term costs.
#6 Filter Changing Ease
Most air purifier manufacturers make it easy, but there are some that require tools and a major disassembly operation. Top quality doesn’t have to be complicated as proven by IQAir air purifiers.
#7 Filter Change Indicator
Why change the filter if you don’t have to? Then again, running a clogged filter isn’t doing you any good and may stress out the motor. The best way to know when the filter needs changing is by a pressure sensitive switch that detects when increased backpressure against the filter indicates clogging. You can find this system in the IQAir HealthPro series.
#8 Gas and Odor Removal
Many manufacturers have a pathetic carbon impregnated fiber pad. These few token ounces of activated carbon can’t remove much. You need many pounds of activated carbon. Special treatments with catalysts and chemisorbers can enhance gas removal ability. Make sure it targets the pollutants of greatest concern to you because each carbon blend is focused on different chemical contaminants.
#9 The Warranty
Good air purifiers last. Most top models come with no less than a five year warranty on all parts including the motor. I’ve seen eight and ten year warranties from companies like AllerAir. Their record proves their air purifiers really do last this long and longer. I have an AllerAir 5000 that’s going strong after five years.
#10 Return Policy
Most top quality air purifier manufacturers have a 30 day return policy. Some, like IQAir allow up to 60 days. This isn’t for defects. You have a warranty for that. This is to allow you time to personally test the air purifier and see if it satisfies your needs. Don’t consider any air purifier you can’t test and return.

Top HEPA Filter Features of Quality Air Purifiers
You’re convinced. You’ve done your research. You’ve consulted the air quality experts. You know that HEPA quality air purifiers are exactly what you need. You’re ready to whip out that credit card and pounce on the best HEPA air purifier deal you can find.
But hold on there! HEPA may be the best game in town but are all HEPA air purifiers created equal? Not by a long shot! You need to know when HEPA filters don’t equal HEPA performance.
What’s Wrong Here? Quality Issues That Stifle Your Air Purifier Performance
By this point in your research you know that HEPA filtration removes close to 99.99% of particles in any size range. It’s lowest performance is a 99.97% efficiency at 0.3 micron particles. But that’s theoretical efficiency. What about the real world? What about actual performance? What factors rob you of the cleanest possible air?
Would you believe that some air purifiers are intentionally designed to be less efficient? Why? Because they’re cheap, that’s why!
Yes, Good ol’ deep discount, cheap air purifiers. They have to be less efficient. One of the most expensive components in high quality air purifiers is the motor. Cut the cost of the motor and you cut the cost of the air purifier.
But a cheap motor can’t work continuously against the back pressure of a HEPA filter. It overheats. It wears out, burns out and dies. So, what to do? Manufacturers design air bypassing into the machine. The pressure is relieved and bypassing air can be used to cool the cheap motor.
Unfortunately you lose air cleaning efficiency.
Cost Cutting the HEPA Filter
High quality air purifiers use high quality HEPA filters. How do you know how your air purifier compares? Simple. Manufacturers are always happy to toot their own horn. So listen to the tune they’re playing.
Manufacturers using cut rate HEPA filters will most likely be silent about essential quality issues or else mumble incoherent nonsense.
What are the essential quality issues for HEPA filters?
First, size matters. The bigger the better. Larger surface area HEPA filters remove more particulates before becoming clogged, thus lasting longer. They can also pass a higher volume of air, removing more particulates with each pass.
Second, the quality of the HEPA filter material and construction are critical. Pleats should be uniform and maintained in place with spacers. Unevenly spaced pleats restrict air flow.
The best material for HEPA filters is thin paper but this is delicate and can be easily damaged by the pleating process or during installation into the air purifier. High quality air purifiers often feature HEPA filters that have been pleated by a process called “warm rolling”. This prevents efficiency robbing cracks from developing in the pleats.
Better quality air purifiers also house the filters in such a way as to prevent damage.
All such quality features are proudly announced by the manufacturers that employ them. Reputable merchants that truly understand air purification will also make certain you know you’re buying quality. Better still, the merchants most dedicated to your satisfaction won’t sell anything but air purifiers that truly perform as expected.
A Few Examples of Top Quality Air Purifiers
I personally own an air purifier by Allerair. They fully address the issues raised above. Another very good choice is IQAir. They actually individually test and certify each air purifier they build for total system efficiency. You get the certifying document so you know exactly how well your personal air purifier performs.
I also like NQ Clarifier, Austin Air and a recently arrived Korean brand, Airgle. AllergyBuyersClub.com and achoo!Allergy.com feature these air purifiers and others of comparable quality. Check them out before you buy another air purifier. You’ll be glad you did.
