If several of your friends and family members each hold a selling party for you, and their friends are in attendance, your network of new leads is already growing.

While you are holding your home parties, you can offer each guest an incentive to provide you with the names and phone numbers of at least five people they feel would love to try your product. I used to offer a special gift that I wrapped really pretty to give to the person who gave me the most names and numbers over five.

Another idea you can try to get more leads is sit down with a notebook and pen. Start thinking of everyone you know. Who do you know that…

- worked with you at a former job?
- works with you now?
- shares the same interests as you?
- lives next door to you?
- used to live next door to you?
- works in your local pharmacy?
- works at your dentist's office?
- works at your local post office?
- goes to your church?
- sells you your office supplies?
- delivers flowers to your house?
- sold you your last pair of glasses?
- mows your grass?
- was in your bridal party?
- attended your wedding?
- works at your local bank?
- delivers your newspaper?
- waited on you at the restaurant?
- waited on you at the grocery store?
- works at the local coffee shop?
- helped you find a movie rental?
- helped you find a best-selling book?
- you went to high school with?
- cuts and styles your hair?

You should be able to come up with a list of at least 75 to 100 names that you can call to introduce your business and product to.

Another way to find leads is to “warm chatter”, as it is called in Mary Kay. It takes a lot of courage to warm chatter and I hated doing it, but I would usually get several leads. Warm chattering is when you go up to someone you see when you are out and about, give them a compliment, and offer them your business card for their name and number in exchange. Most people who warm chatter will start a conversation with the prospect before trying to get their name and number. you also have to be careful where you warm chatter because many of your shopping centers and other businesses have no soliciting policies. I have known women who have been asked to leave the establishment by security because they were heard warm chattering and due to customer complaints.

Join your local Chamber of Commerce and attend all of the networking events they offer. By networking with other business professionals, you can get ideas and great leads for your own business.

Depending on the type of product you sell, try setting up at a local clothing store. Stores such as Dress Barn and Casual Corner generally welcome cosmetic company representatives to network with their clients. I used to set up a small table with a product display, product samples and business cards. As customers would come into the store, I would offer them a sample, talk to them about the product, and get their names and numbers for a product drawing I offered. I generated several leads this way and found some great customers and recruits using this method.

In the area I live, Mary Kay was, and still is, very saturated. I built a lot of my customer base outside of the town I lived. If you are looking to build your business outside your local area, first decide how far you are willing to travel, whether it be 30 minutes or three hours. Sit down with a map and highlight every town that falls within your traveling range. Now you have somewhere to start. As you finish building in each town, cross that town off the map.

I hope these suggestions help you build your customer base. Always be prepared to hear “no” from a lot of people in order to get a “yes” from your leads. This is why it is important to have a large number of leads to contact. It also takes a lot of patience and you have to be willing to not give up quickly in order to succeed. No matter how hard I worked, I never really made the type of money I was promised I would make for my effort. I ended up working more hours than what I was working at my regular job. You have to decide though if you have what it takes to continue in a business like direct sales and if you are willing to push through the tough times that are abundant in this type of business.

IPA – “Income Producing Activity”

What is an IPA and what differentiates it from any other activities?

The fact is that many people in network marketing businesses haven't really grasped this concept in it's most effective sense. They (unknowlingly) mistake unproductive work as income producing activity.

I'll be the first to say, that I fell into this trap myself years ago.

Let me explain:

For simplification purposes, let's say there are just 2 categories of activities (work) in building a network marketing or MLM business. They are Busy Work Activities and IPA's (Income Producing Activities).

What are some examples of busy work?

- Attending a conference call.
- Going to a company or upline meeting.
- Attending a convention or a company event.
- Reading over company brochures or websites.
- Talking to 3 strangers a day because your upline said to.
- Studying the compensation plan or product specs.
- Talking on Instant Messenger day and night.
- Listening to training cd's or reading a book about MLM.
- Thinking about your 'why' and if it's big enough.
- Checking email (unless it's from someone who wants to purchase what you are offering).
- Anything that is not DIRECTLY related to putting money in your pocket.

Now, are the things above important? Sure they are, but they should be considered secondary activities because they take your time and focus off of the most important thing: GETTING RESULTS.

Let me ask you something here:

If you know how to get consistent results in your business, then why would you spend so much time on activities that may possibly take time away from you obtaining your primary objective?

One of the reasons (in my opinion) that people get so in to all the conference calls, meetings, annual conventions and such is because it sort of feels like you are working your business in some wierd way, and learning some things while you are around others in the same boat, and there's always some 'exciting' news you need to hear. You are going through 'training'. You are told to 'Stay Plugged In'.

What does that mean? Well, for one it's an easy way to keep you in the business longer by getting you all excited over other people's successes, or the products, or the triple infinity comp plan, or the company, or the new distribution plant coming out soon, etc.

Yes, they are forms of training, and training is very important. However, the most effective training is one that produces predictable, consistent results. If you have been in calls or have gone to meetings and you still are not getting predictable results on a consistent basis, then you may want to take a good look at the so-called training you are tapping into.

Either it's not really that great OR you haven't yet implemented it correctly.

Truth be know (in my opinion), it's usually that it's not that great. Mostly just rehashed information everyone already knows mixed in with excitement, hype, and 'you can do it' terminology. Going back to my article on training – it has to focus on marketing and predictable results.

Now, what are some examples of True IPA's?

- Making a sale.
- Generating your own leads.
- Signing up a business builder.
- Performing proven marketing methods on a daily basis.
- Effectively training your organization on marketing to duplicate your efforts.
- Anything that when the action is completed or accomplished, it directly generates dollars for you.

So, here's a helpful way to locate and filter out any non-essential activities:

Sit down with a pen and a piece of paper. Think about every activity you do on a daily basis that is in any way related to your network marketing business. Write down each activity you performed, the time you spent on that activity, and what the direct result for that activity was (or is currently).

This will assist you in narrowing down the essential activities needed to produce your desired results, and will help you to spend less time on the non-essentials and more on the activities that count.

Then, take a look at the results you are getting or not getting from your marketing efforts. If your results are sporatic and inconsistent, you may want to consider what kind of education (training) you are getting and question the effectiveness of either IT or YOU.

Before you perform an activity for your business, simpley ask yourself: 'Is this a true IPA?'

Remember, we all need to constantly educate ourselves and stay ahead of the curve; but getting results is easy when you've been taught the basic template and what to look for. If you know how to effectively market, you can be successful in just about any business.

It's ok to do 'busy work' sometimes, but just don't confuse it for a true IPA or spend your 'on duty' time doing it. Save it for after hours.

Since that early beginning many companies have come and gone in the MLM business. Amway, Mary Kay, Primarica and Tupperware among others have gone on to become billion dollar companies. One of the biggest differences between this old style of MLM and the new MLM companies is that the old style MLM manufactured their own products, the new MLM sells product manufactured by others. So what does this really mean? Why is it important, you may ask. Very simple, the old style MLM had to raise capital by borrowing money and selling stock in the company. When these company's sold a product, after the manufacturing process was paid for, the loan payments had to be made and the stock holders given dividends. The money left over was given to the sales Reps as a commission. Not a lot of money left over in this system to pay the down-lines being built, although it has made quite a few millionaires over the years.

The new MLM system started with Paul Orberson starting Fortune Hi Tech Marketing. Mr. Orberson then went to major corporations like Dish Network with this proposal: Fortune Hi Tech Marketing will bring you customers with no upfront cost to you. Companies like Dish Network are asked to take money that they would have spent on advertising anyway and the money they would have paid a franchise holder and pay that money to FHTM each time a new customer is acquired. A win/win situation for both the new MLM and the manufacturer doing business with them. This marrying of the new MLM with major corporations has become so successful that Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile, Home Depot, Dupont, Toys R Us and hundreds of other companies have gotten on board and are now doing business the new MLM way. Fortune Hi Tech Marketing has become one of the fastest growing new MLM companies in reaching a billion dollars in sales in less than nine years of business.

The new MLM way also is a business model that instead of stressing large amounts of sales from its Reps, is a system of consumption. Let's face it, you can hire a 1000 people off the streets in any sales organization, only a handful, even with good training, will ever become good sales people. With the new MLM way Reps are becoming their own consumer and lets face facts, MLM members have always consumed their own products. The problem with the old style MLM is that a Rep was required to stock a lot of product and try and sell it. Some did well in sales while others just got stuck with products.

Well, let me ask you something here:

Are you trying to make more money for yourself and your team OR would you rather see more money and attention brought to the company you are promoting?

That may seem like a dumb question, but the WAY you are marketing and promoting your business says more about that subject than your response to it.

(Now, please don't get upset and close your mind here. Just hear me out and make your own decision at the end of this article.)

This brings up questions like: If the products sell themselves, why does your company need you? If the comp plan is the best, then why are there people in other networking companies making more than people in your company? If this is such a great opportunity, then why do you need to track people down to tell them all about how great it really is? Why do so many networkers talk more about their company and products than they do their own children?

The deal is, your company does need you because you bring in the key component that they may not be able to achieve on their own – which is relationships and creative marketers.

Getting back to the main point here:

* Instead of spending so much time promoting and building up a company you represent, wouldn't it be a better business decision to promote and build up YOURSELF more?

What if you switched gears and instead of attracting and linking people to your network marketing company; you attracted and linked people to YOU, and then had the power to control where you direct and lead those people?

Something that happens quite a bit in this business is companies that up and close all of a sudden or get raided by the FDA or the Government, or have a financial crisis, or change the comp plan, etc.

Just the same is the fact that your prospects now have many great mlm companies and products to choose from and can be much more selective about who they deal with in their decision of those companies.

What this means to you is that if you are not attracting people to you FIRST, people have no real reason to join in business with you specifically.

What do you have to offer that any other rep doesn't have?

So, let me give an example here. Say you have a prospect who you are trying to get as a rep in your business:

You paint this awesome picture of your company (all the benefits and features) to your prospect and try to get them involved.

Well, they decide for whatever reason, that they do not want to become a rep with your company and they move on.

You have just lost your chance with that prospect because all you had to offer them was your opportunity and nothing more. They will not come back to you unless they decide they want to join that particular company, and even then they might find a crossline rep they like more than you and join with them. They have no other use for you, and you have no more attractiveness to them.

Now, what about this:

Contrast this by attracting people to you FIRST (by positioning yourself as an expert in your field) and giving them something of value (such as a free informational generic newsletter, ebook, webinar, etc.) and then directing them to the course that is best for them including your primary business.

Doing it this way can allow you to be attractive to prospects at all times, and even if they don't join you in your primary business, they are still connected with you and not just sold on your company. They trust you and consider you more of a help than of a annoying sales rep who thinks their particular company is the best thing out there.

It's very easy to find network marketers who are in love with their company and spend all of their time praising their company and it's products, conventions, and all of that stuff.

However, it's rare when you find someone who attracts people to them first through correct positioning, and is able to more effectively help prospects above and beyond their business opportunity.

Sure we should be proud to represent the company we are with, but they are not the be all end all. They are mearly a means to an end. If you are a true independent marketer, you don't have to rely so much on driving every person to your primary company because you are bringing people to you first, then you have the chance to help them much more than just getting them in your business opportunity. You have much more to offer.

Not only that, but regular network marketers are a dime a dozen. People don't want to work with the average Joe networker. Why would they, anyway (the statistics of the masses are terrible)? People want to deal with someone who they can trust and someone who can give them more information than just the typical sales pitch of their particular company that every other rep is also using. I mean, most everyone says their particular company is the best, their 'system' is the best, yada, yada. Who really cares? Prospects have heard it all before. They want results and they want someone who is different and who gives before they get.

You are either independently unique, or you are simply following the followers.
