Being frugal for all of my adult life, I’ve learned a thing or two about thrifting. One of the most frequent questions I get is how I find such good deals. Good deals sometimes just come around, but most times it takes time and work to get them from being frumpy to fabulous.
Find your favorite. It can take quite some time to find the best thrift store in your area. Searching one out can take one Saturday morning, a couple of weeks or even a few months. Look in the yellow pages, ask friends, even ask workers at “bad” thrift stores if there are others in the area. Church run shops tend to be great stores in some areas, while others have great Goodwills. It takes a little time to figure it out.
Check your list twice. Just because a store seems bad the first go round, give it another try. Every store has good and bad days. Maybe you hit a bad day the first time, it may get better. However, if all the clothes are 70′s rejects and all the dishes are chipped, you may have a “junk” store on your hands, but if things are in generally good condition, then give it a second shot.
Shop often. Once you find the perfect place, go often. Be the early bird that gets the worm. Since good thrift shops frequently get in new items, the more frequently you shop, the better your chances. Once you get to know the store, you will be able to spot new items quickly, and you will know the location of your favorite types of items.
Make friends with the shopkeeper. Going frequently to the same store means that you will become acquainted with the workers. Clerks are a wealth of information. They can tell you which days the new stock comes in, and which days are less crowded. If you are constantly on the look out for a certain item (like wooden candlesticks), they might keep an eye out for you and set things aside occasionally. Workers can also let you know about upcoming sales.
See through the flaws. Look at the lines of furniture to see if it’s pleasing to you. Next, give it the “wiggle test” – put it on level ground and see if it wobbles around. If it is sturdy it might be worth painting or recovering. If it is wobbly, it has structural issues. Structure issues can be small and fixable, or they can be severe and not worth the effort. A table can be cut in half and mounted on a wall, or is it cheap enough to cut apart and use the different pieces. Headboards can be made into a bench. Paint can hide a multitude of sins!
Take lessons. Don’t know how to reupholster a chair? You Tube has a video to help you out! Can’t figure out what color to paint your table? Search for inspiration on blogs & home improvements websites. The internet is a wealth of information that can help you learn how to fix, change or improve nearly anything. The best place to start? The weight of your wallet has been hit by the recession this year. You’re wondering if you’ll be able to put a smile on the faces of your children on Christmas morning. Fear not! The time has come for you to dig deep into your resourcefulness to attack that Christmas shopping list. You can still enjoy Christmas this year as long as you’re armed with a pre-planned budget and are willing to sniff out the best deals in town. Here are some of the places in Boise where I’ll be heading out to shop at for my little girl.
Budget Christmas Shopping at Dollar Tree (Boise, Idaho)
Everything at the Dollar Tree store costs, you guessed right, one dollar. Consider the items in this store for your Christmas decorations, stocking stuffers (for children) and fillers for a hamper gift. The various locations make it convenient to shop whenever you happen to be near one of them.

Budget Christmas Shopping at Wal-Mart (Boise, Idaho)
Wal-Mart’s already low prices are further discounted during the Christmas shopping season. Their wide variety of products such as clothes, toys, books and electronic items makes it easy to shop for, not just the children, but everyone on your Christmas list. Try shopping on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, for the best deals this season.

Budget Christmas Shopping at ROSS (Boise, Idaho)
Although ROSS Dress for Less is best known as a clothing discount store, they also carry household items, toys and gifts, for a fraction of the price you would pay in bigger stores. I often find branded shoes at very low prices for my little girl whose feet seem to grow every month.

Budget Christmas Shopping at TJ Maxx (Boise, Idaho)
TJ Maxx is very similar in concept to ROSS. However, they also carry furniture, linen and a wider variety of houseware in addition to clothes, toys, books and shoes. TJ Maxx is my alternative to other stores for buying well known books for my little one.

When thinking of spending within your budget this Christmas, why not go down the “used” path?
Budget Christmas Shopping at Kid to Kid (Boise, Idaho)
Kid to Kid sells new and gently used kids clothes, toys, books and baby furniture. I have personally found that new items such as branded puzzles and toy musical instruments are cheaper here than in the bigger toy stores. Click here for the location of Kid to Kid in Boise.
Budget Christmas Shopping at Plato’s Closet (Boise, Idaho)
Head on over to Plato’s Closet to stock up on clothes for your fashionable teen or tween. They carry gently used clothing with top brand names such as Abercrombie & Fitch, Express, Guess, Billabong, Levi and many more. Save some money by selling your gently used branded clothing and accessories. Out with the old, in with the new.

Budget Christmas Shopping on Craigslist (Boise, Idaho)
Scour the pages of Craigslist Boise for every used item you can think of. The “baby+kids” section is the one to hit to find used and sometimes even new items for the kids. Sellers post items for sale throughout the day. So make sure to check this website often to grab the latest bargain.
Remember that shopping for Christmas gifts on a budget does not only mean having to buy cheaper gifts. Planning ahead of time to take advantage of sales such as the Black Friday sale will help you emerge from this Christmas shopping season without a hole in your pocket.

Deciding where your body will spend the rest of eternity is not a decision to be taken lightly. Not only must you determine which cemetery you’d like to be buried in, but also the precise spot in the cemetery among available plots. Many people choose cemetery plots in family clusters while others choose a final resting place all to their own. Use these tips for choosing a cemetery plot that you can live with.
Choosing a Cemetery Plot: Family Preference
Some cemeteries have family plots where dozens of people from the same family are buried together. Others simply want to be buried near their parents, siblings or spouse; it’s entirely up to you. One of the benefits of having a large family plot is that relatives can visit many graves at once without having to travel all over the country. Some people also enjoy the idea that, even though they might have lived far apart during life, they will spend all of eternity next to one another. Just remember that if you want to start a family area of a cemetery (i.e. one hasn’t been created yet), you should make sure to reserve several plots at once so that they don’t get taken up by others in the near future.
Choosing a Cemetery Plot: Area of the Country
In some areas of the country, graves are found more often in mausoleums and niches rather than in the ground. This is usually due low ground that floods easily; when bodies are kept in mausoleums, you don’t have to worry about the ground erosion. If you live in a place like southern California or Louisiana, you might be better off looking at mausoleums. If, however, you live in an area where the ground is high, ground plots are just fine. Also, remember that in areas where the ground freezes, bodies cannot be buried until the spring or summer when everything warms up. The area of the country in which you live will have much to do with the cemetery plot you choose.
Choosing a Cemetery Plot: Price
Cemetery plots can run anywhere from $250 to more than $4,000, depending on the location and the cemetery. While price shouldn’t be the only determining factor, it is just as important to “shop around” for cemetery plots as it is for lawn furniture and mattresses. You can usually find a plot where you can compromise price with location. A cemetery plot with a view of a wooded area or pond will be far more expensive than one in the middle of a cemetery. You might also find that cemeteries that are connected with churches are more expensive. A mausoleum will typically be less expensive than a ground plot, though this also depends on the location and the size of the mausoleum.
Choosing a Cemetery Plot: Perpetual Care
Many people choose to purchase cemetery plots that come with a Perpetual Care service. This service costs an extra one-time fee and guarantees that the property management service that governs the cemetery will keep your cemetery plot clean, mown and free of weeds. Some cemeteries require that your purchase their perpetual care service because they want to keep the entire cemetery looking nice year-round, which is expensive. With other cemeteries this service is optional, but a good idea.

Modern Furniture Stories

After working for a furniture leasing company for several years as a store manager, I can tell you exactly how to save a few hundred dollars the next time you go furniture shopping.
The next time you decide to go look for new furniture for yourself or someone else, take along with you these three insider furniture buying tips.
Furniture buying tip #1 – Go to your local furniture rental or leasing store first. People don’t realize how much money you can save by buying leased furniture. When a piece of furniture comes back from being leased out, you have the opportunity to buy it at a discount. That’s right. You can buy bedroom, office, and entertainment furniture all at great discounted prices. Just be sure to check it out thoroughly before you buy it.
Furniture buying tip #2 – Ask for a discount. As an ex-furniture store manager, I can tell you this, always ask for a better price. This especially pertains to furniture at a rental store. Also, the more you buy, the better the package price will be. You can literally save hundreds of dollars just for asking. Usually you can expect a ten percent discount right off the top, but you can ask for more.
Furniture buying tip #3 – Go to the sales events. Any time a furniture store has a sale, be sure you go. They will usually have items at deeper discount to draw the customers in. Once you get to the sale event, ask to talk to a manager and tell them you are looking to buy a lot of furniture and that you want the best deal they can offer. Again, ask for the best price. This is a ripe opportunity to save money because they need to get rid of some of their stock as soon as possible. Especially look for sales at the end of the year.
Ok, you twisted my arm, here’s one more insider secret. Lastly, get to know your local furniture store manager. Drop in every so often and say hello and take a look at what’s new and on sale. Here’s why, it will pay off down the road. I had several people that I became friends with throughout the years and I always gave them the absolute best price possible when it came time for them to buy from me. I know it may seem a little strange at first, but be genuine about it and it will help you save money the next time you are ready to buy furniture.
