Vh1 Storytellers Charming, but brief – Lucy in the Sky – Florida
David Bowie’s 1999 appearance on Vh1′s “Storytellers” is about an hour’s worth of intimate performances and entertaining stories. Bowie is a charming conversationalist, and his anecdotes provide a bit of insight into his early career. The set list is anything but predictable, with obscure songs like his first solo single, “Can’t Help Thinking About Me,” alongside hits like “Life on Mars?” and a short but effective take on “Rebel Rebel.” The show is enjoyable all the way through.

My only complaint is that the DVD seemed a little sparse. The bonus tracks are nice, but there must’ve been something else they could’ve included as well. It’s also a little annoying that the DVD bonus tracks are not included on the CD except on the iTunes version. Despite these small drawbacks, “Storytellers” is a must-have for any David Bowie fan.
This is a wonderful concert with surprisingly personal, revealing stories. David Bowie is obviously still at the top of his game as a performer. If you are a Bowie fan this is totally essential. I love his band. I love the reimagined songs. I find I don’t get tired of the stories, even when I’m listening to the CD.

However, I have some problems with the way the concert is presented. This is a DVD for home use, not a broadcast with the restrictions imposed by commercial breaks and time limitations. I wish they had edited all 12 songs together and created a real concert more like the one that was enjoyed by the people who had the good fortune to see this live.

Instead, there are just eight songs on the main part of the DVD and the CD. Unforgivably, the closing credits roll OVER Bowie’s dramatic and moving performance of “Word On A Wing”. Why? There’s no pressure to get to the next show on VH1! Four songs are left off of the CD entirely (although, maddeningly, they’re available on iTunes) and they are only on the DVD as bonus tracks.

Final warning: “Rebel, Rebel” is very, very short and “Life On Mars?” only has the second verse. Again, why was this concert and CD not re-edited into a more complete version for home release? No clue. Sort of a missed opportunity.

If you want to hear a more complete concert from the same era I highly recommend disc three of the special edition of “Bowie At The Beeb”, although that doesn’t include the priceless stories here. Plus it’s out of print and you’ll have to get it used so you’ll avoid some possible heartbreak by making sure you are being sent the right edition before ordering.

To sum up: great concert, great performances, great stories. Lousy editing and a disappointing presentation of terrific material.Bowie at the Beeb: The Best of the BBC Radio Sessions : CD/DVD edition of this release which features David Bowie’s 1999 appearance on VH1′s hugely popular Storytellers series. Storytellers began in 1996 with intimate TV performances by Ray Davies and Elvis Costello. Over the next few years many singer/songwriters appeared on the show, performing in front of a live audience while telling stories of their music and memories. Bill Flanagan, Executive Producer of the show explains, “We were used to dealing with legendary musicians. Still, landing David Bowie was more than a big booking. There’s no way to say this without being corny: it was an honor. Bowie has a unique place in Rock ‘N’ Roll. He is not only one of the most influential musicians of the era, he does nothing unless he is fully committed. He never phones it in.” Vh1 Storytellers

Welcome to Vh1 Storytellers

Welcome to Vh1 Storytellers no stories! – Emily Best – USA
I bought this b/c I thought there would be stories that the artists would tell like the VH1 series. I was wrong. This cd is lost now, b.c I dont care about it.
Missing the stories! They are in the liner notes… but most of the poignancy of the “Storytellers” events is in the actual TELLING of the stories… I really love Counting Crows’ “Rain King” but have a hard time listening it severed from Adam Duritz’ introduction. Then again… after one or two “hears” of the stories it would likely get pretty old… after all, it is all about the music. Thus, four stars instead of three. As for the music: Those of you who must have your music polished and technically perfect… you’ll never get the soul… as Jewel obviously does. So she’s no Lady Day… but I was very impressed just the same. She is a throwback to that old Janis Joplin/Carole King/Joni Mitchell improvisational stuff from the ’70s and I personally LOVE it. Best part… her little snicker (those who’ve heard it know what I’m talking about – she was having a good time). Stevie is wonderful, as is Bowie and Dave Mathews… but the hardest piece to ignore is that haunting, edgy Blues Traveler piece. It grows on me… at first I really didn’t want to deal with it and then it occured to me that it’s been a while since I heard commercial music that required one to “deal with it”. Good show, John Popper… Annie Lennox and the guitar… let’s have some more of that, Annie… Annie? Annie? Will we EVER have another fully original CD from you? John Cougar had fun but was absurd… one listen to that was enough. If I want rap I’ll listen to Tupac. Let’s not talk about Barry Gibb, and better leave that Lisa Loeb piece alone… a great rendition but WHY did they put it right behind Jewel? Pacing is not one of the stengths of this CD, but it is a collection after all. Still, the strength of five or six songs is worth the CD. I have read a review or two expressing dissapointment that only one song per artist is presented… well, that is the point of a collection… remember “MTV Unplugged”? If one wants more than one song per artist… buy their CD… (I’d say download it but RIP Napster…). OK, 4 stars it is. Buy this CD. It’s a good one. Who knows… maybe your kids will even like it, John Cougar notwithstanding. : It’s difficult to fathom the thinking behind this overview of VH1′s popular Storytellers series. Begin with the fact that the actual stories are expunged from the recording. If you want the tales behind the songs, you’ll have to read the booklet. So the music is left to stand on its own, but with each of the 15 artists allowed one selection to make their mark, even those that stand tall don’t stand for long. David Bowie brings a tremendous focus to “China Girl”; Sheryl Crow and Stevie Nicks mix their voices in “Strong Enough” to striking effect; and the Eurythmics’s “Here Comes the Rain Again” improves upon the hit original. On the downside, Jewel’s caterwauling in “Who Will Save Your Soul” (the singer gets tangled up in a ball of yarn as she meows into the mic) makes one want to use “scat” in the feline rather than the Fitzgerald sense of the term. –Steven Stolder Welcome to Vh1 Storytellers

VH1 Storytellers [CD + DVD Combo]

VH1 Storytellers [CD + DVD Combo] Like the title says, you are purchasing this for the CD with the DVD being a bonus. So all the reviews complaining about DVD quality definitely missed the point.

This album brings to light the producing style and artistic direction West is heading. Simply put it is amazing. It’s great to see that West doesn’t stop growing when the song hits the album. He continues to build and refine his favorite songs as he performs them live. To the point that they sound like completely different songs with a live band behind him. Especially the tracks from 808′s, his lyrical mastermind turned what could only be described as “emo” music into a huge crowd pleasing, panty throwing, dancing, screaming the lyriucs out loud affair.

The DVD has some extras such as a Q n A session that lets you see a little deeper into the genius that is Kanye West. The songs that didn’t air live were cut for a reason though, only 1 of the 3 is worth watching. The others seem as though they either missed some type of post production or just didn’t go with the set well.

For any Kanye fan this is a must buy, especially for those of us that haven’t had the fortune of seeing or hearing him live. You get a great taste of why Kanye is the best and the pure emotion that drives him there. Final advice: Listen to the CD on its own well in advance of watching the DVD. It reminded me of reading a book and then seeing the feature film, it just doesn’t compare to what your mind can create. West: 808′s & Heartbreak ushered in a new dimension of sound from arguably music’s most outspoken artist.

Fresh off the release of Kanye’s fourth #1 album, 808′s & Heartbreak, VH1 and Mr. West collaborated for a special concert as part of the critically acclaimed Storytellers series. A collection of live performances from Kanye’s arsenal of hits including songs from his ground breaking 808′s & Heartbreak album.

DVD/CD with over 70 minutess of live performance footage! Includes the hits “Heartless,” “Flashing Lights,” “Touch the Sky,” “Good Life,” “Stronger.” and more. Plus three never-before-seen performances and special Q&A interview with Kanye.

Two-disc set includes live audio featuring the performance set as aired on VH1.
