Deciding on a Paddling Jacket

A paddling jacket could be a difficult choice for making when getting ready to go out kayaking. The best analogy based on how a paddling jacket works is that it must be the most notable half or possibly a dry suit. It'll gives a layer of waterproof material between your wetsuit plus the outside water. This can help you stay from getting random splashes of cold water poured across you when you kayak and keep your upper torso much warmer. Warm days can mean that you'll not need a paddling jacket at all, but whenever the weather turns cold you will greatly appreciate having that layer of protection. When it get s really cold you'll be able to squeeze in a sweater or other ways to stay warm between your wetsuit and drysuit. Choose carefully what sweater you wear though, make sure its one that will still insulate you when wet. If you're confused about what a paddling jacket is and that of a dry top is, it is because of him their amount of waterproofing. Both jackets have all their seams and cuffs with some sort of seal to protect you from having water pour in, but often times on paddling jackets they aren't as thourough or too protected as they could be. Over a dry suit, they've a waterproof zipper along with a very the right gaskets and seals at intervals of opening, on the neck, bottom, and both wrists. This will help you stay totally dry in even the worst conditions. They are going to however not protect you in event of a swim.

Kayaking Tips

If you look at the owner photo gallery on the Native Watercraft site you will see a few different mounting options. There aren't a lot of photos of the pedal-drive version with fish finders. I looks like you can get a rail clamp and put it on the tube just forward of the pedals or try a mount on the cockpit rails. For either of those options you will probably want to look at RAM or Scotty mounts. Some users (mostly paddlers) have made what look like combo cutting boards/electronics/rod holder mounts. I'm not sure if that would work for yours, but you could try. My advice is to make a little 3D cardboard FF and duct tape it to a couple of different likely mounting points. Paddle/pedal around for a while and figure out which works best. Make sure you can see the screen, reach the controls while paddling/pedaling and that it doesn't get in the way of your legs/feet or rods

I just remembered that some guy from Florida posted pics of his Native on La Jolla Kayak fishing. It isn't the same model, but he did a lot of work on it.

paddle on one side then the other
it will take a while to stabilize your rhythm so don’t give up

Take it slow and easy at first. Get a good rythm going.dont pull too hard on one side so figure out your stronger sside and lighten up.Put your fin/rudder on if you have one

Get a feel of the river. Paddle left wait, then right or what ever.You have to go from side to side in order to go straight. You just have to play around to find out how to go straight. It all depends on the conditions of the water.

Kayaking Tips

This is an ad for points collecting at a local gas station. Only 67,000 points equals a sea kayaking tour it says. Interesting that someone in the advertising department sees one of the benefits of collecting points is a sea kayaking tour. Maybe a kayaker themselves; maybe they know something.

What is it about the “yay” factor in sea kayaking that we all experience? Moreover, what is it that drives some of us to become addicted and others content to paddle a few times in the summer?

I feel it more at this time of year when paddling opportunities are limited by weather and circumstances. Its the freedom to poke along the shoreline, scoot between rocks, poke into caves or at the other extreme, to paddle out in the open ocean in big waves far from shore. Its about being a master of your own ship, learning new skills and a chance to prove your own self-sufficiency. Its about being out in the great wide open and leaving everyday ordinary chores behind on the beach.

Sea kayaking is many more things of course but one thing for sure, it makes me happy. Even if its only looking forward to my next paddle.

Ever paddle at night? Was it on purpose?
I've been kayaking in the dark a few times, and it was always a fascinating thing to see dimly-guessed shapes, and plenty of reflections. It's really interesting to watch the light fade out of the sky, and even more interesting in some ways to be out before dawn and watch the sky get brighter and brighter. The sun is almost a surprise!
But it's when the sky is getting darker that I'm getting more and more alert. It's like the mop of grey hair on my head has turned into long antennae reaching out into the dark to help me try to be aware of what's going on.
Out on the water yesterday, I realized that it wasn't just getting dark because it's still winter. (Yeah, yeah, I know that most people don't consider February STILL winter. I spent fifteen years in Edmonton, where the seasons are not spring, summer, autumn and winter, but Almost Winter, Winter, Still Winter, and Construction. By Alberta standards, February is only half-past Winter. But here in Victoria, half-past February means there were two cherry trees blooming on the open shore.) It was getting dark because the clouds were coming in thick on the weather front, AND it was the end of a winter's day. I was glad to know that I'm familiar with this bay in most kinds of weather and most times of day. While I don't paddle in a howling gale or after midnight, I've been on the beach in both those kinds of weather.
It's a darned good idea to get to know your home waters at different times of day. What colours are the lights on the buoys and lighthouses, and how often do they blink? You can tell the lights apart, here, by their frequency, duration and colours. What are the lights like on the shoreline? Get to know how your home waters look at sunset and at night. Even if you don't intend to paddle in the dark, an afternoon outing can end up getting pretty dark if the current and wind pick up and delay your return. It's always good to be sure where you are.

I recently purchase a new fishing kayak and was keen to try it out. I went to a private dam just outside of town and arrived there at about five o’clock the afternoon. A lot of rain has fallen in the area lately and the water was very murky. I set out with my normal start up lures consisting of a plastic (creature bait) on the one rod and a surface lure (Zara spook) on the other. After finding my feet on the new kayak I started casting out lures. After about an hour I still had nothing, not even a touch. I decided to row up to the dam wall to search for cleaner water. It was a very cloudy day and at the dam wall in the one corner there was a good beam of sunshine coming through and I immediately put on a shiny spinner bait. On my second cast out to the sunny patch I was on. I could feel that this was a really decent size fish and I proceeded with care. Just as it came up beside the kayak it stared me right in the eyes and with a look of spitefulness spit the lure right out like a baby would do a dummy. My spinner bait suffered far worse than my ego and was a mess. I tied on another and after a couple of cast I was on to yet another decent bass. I successfully landed it and it weight 1.8kg. Time was ticking and I managed to land one more bass before I had to head home.

Whitewater Kayak

On January 6, Inglourious Basterds' Eli Roth tweeted the whole harrowing story of his disastrous vacation in Mexico, in which his kayak sank, leaving him stranded in the ocean on a rock, standing on a crowd of spiky sea urchins until he was finally rescued by a fisherman. We caught up with him yesterday afternoon at the BAFTA/LA Awards Season Tea Party, and he was still hurting, hobbling up the red carpet. “I got about 25 of the urchins out the other day,” he said. “I still have them in my toes. Imagine a pencil breaking off and staying in. It's horrible. Some of them are buried so deep in my toes, I don't know how I'm gonna get them out. I'm gonna have to get surgery on my foot. I can't run. I can't really walk.”

The Hostel director also gave a few more details on where the faulty kayak came from: He had been out swimming when he first saw the boat tied to a buoy: “This fisherman was like 'Oh, you wanna use my kayak?,' and I'm like, 'Okay.' So, I went off behind an island and I didn't notice there was a hole in the kayak and it sank. I was in open water, without a life preserver.” Total stranger's kayak, no life preserver, out of sight of land: What could go wrong? SMASH CUT TO: sea urchins.

Hobbled though he may be, you can not keep the Bear Jew down. The night before, at the New York Times Style Magazine cocktail party, he was spotted hovering over a blonde, whispering, “You should come out later.” Take that, sea life!
