Downloading MP3s Legally and Not-so Legally

Today there are countless ways in which to download music off the Internet, as well as countless options of where to download MP3s. One may download their MP3s from a service such as the iTunes Music Store, Yahoo Music or eMusic that charges per song or album. Or one may take advantage of “cereal box” specials that offer free music downloads with the purchase of a certain product.

Or one may download MP3s for free through BitTorrent, Internet Relay Chat (IRC), File Transfer Protocol (FTP), or Peer-to-peer (P2P) services, such as Kazaa. These are the gray areas, if you will, when it comes to the legality of downloading MP3s.

From photocopying a page from a library book to recording a television show to TIVO and transferring to a DVD, therein lays a gray area of what is acceptable and what is down-right illegal. Napster became hugely popular not because it offered a great way to share files but because one could download countless MP3s without paying for them.

Either way one sees it, downloading MP3s is incredibly popular with music lovers. Apple Computer Inc. recently sold their one-billionth song through its iTunes service. This proves consumers are willing to pay for their music, but what if they already purchased the music on cassette tape or compact disc? Is there a need to pay for it again to have it in MP3 format?

Therein lays another issue within the gray area. Is downloading an MP3 from a bittorrent illegal if you already own the song? The arguments for this issue go on and on. The music recording industry states it is stealing because consumers paid for the song in one particular format (e.g. cassette tape) and are not entitled to another format without paying for it. Music fans argue they paid for the private use of the song, not the format it resided in.

Condoning illegal activity, I am not; however, as long as you’re not distributing this content either online or selling it on the streets, it’s extremely unlikely you’ll actually be caught and prosecuted for simply backing up your media files or downloading occasional songs from the Internet.

Music artists are even encouraging this by offering some of their songs on their Web sites available to download for free. It’s a great way to build up a fan base and attract new listeners.

In conclusion, have fun with your MP3 collection and don’t let all the lawsuits and negative press keep you from purchasing an MP3 digital music player or from downloading music off the Internet. Play by the basic rules and you’ll be surprised at how much fun you can have.

DirecTV Versus DISH Network – So Which One Do You Choose?

So you know that cable is more expensive and you want to go with satellite TV. But there are all these deals between DirecTV and DISH network. What is the difference?

Let’s first talk about DirecTV. They are the largest provider of digital satellite TV. The company services over 15 million customers nationwide and its DirecTV system offers 250 channels.

DirecTV uses well known companies to build its systems. Sony, Panasonic, and RCA, produce their satellite receivers. The DirecTV system includes an 18-inch dish, an integrated receiver decoder and a remote control. They have two broadcasting centers, one in Colorado and one in California and they transmit signals to five satellites.

Now let’s talk about DISH network. They are part of the larger company EchoStar and they are the fastest growing satellite TV company. DISH network services several million customers and adds at least 100,000 new customers on a monthly basis.

DISH network is the second largest provider and is based in Colorado. The company’s service offers 500 satellite TV channels including digital video and music stations. Their satellite dishes are manufactured by EchoStar Technologies.

So in terms of quality both companies are right up there. Both companies offer free products when you sign up as a new customer, provided you sign a minimum 12 month contract. Both DirecTV and DISH network offer free satellite packages. The free packages include an 18″ or 21″ satellite dish, up to five satellite receivers for your televisions, free professional installation of system, a video recorder (either a personal video recorder or TiVo), and, usually, a few months of free service. Depending on the time of the year each supplier will offer a teaser, like a gift or cash to attract people to sign up with them.

One difference between the suppliers is in who owns the equipment. With DirecTV the customer owns the system, while with DISH network you don’t own the equipment unless you pay a small fee upfront. This fee is normally refunded on the first bill, but you need to enquire about this or read the small print.

Both DirecTV and DISH network offer digital video recorders. The difference is in the type of recorder offered and the upfront costs. Installation times vary for both companies. Usually both companies can install within 24 hours, dependant on a few factors though.

Both providers offer local programming and international programming, but you should check each local programming package for certain channels. The difference will be determined by your personal viewing preferences and the channels offered.

You will find that costs are much the same between programming packages, except for special programming or extra packages you choose.

DirecTV owns the rights to several sports packages, including NHL Center Ice, MLB Extra Innings, Yankee games, NFL Sunday Ticket, and NBA League Pass, which show just about every NFL game, and offers a greater number of international channels.

The DirecTV system offers up to 250 channels while DISH network provides up to 500 channels. There are small advantages between each, with no real disadvantages, but it does depend on your location and what you want to watch on your satellite TV.

Mad Men – Pure 60′s Style

As I’m sitting here in between television seasons and feeling nostalgic for my favorite show, Mad Men, I may just have to dress up my family and friends and keep the plot rolling along in my own invented world. If you’ve never seen Mad Men, you’re crazy! This Golden Globe and Emmy winning television drama that airs on the AMC channel is part high-brow drama, part social commentary, and part uncanny kitschy fun. Set your Tivo for season four in 2010 if you’re not afraid to dive into the issues of cigarette smoking, drinking, sexism, adultery, homophobia, anti-Semitism and racism that were prevalent in the 1960s.

One thing that you’ll notice right away when watching Mad Men is the historical authenticity and visual style of the 60s costumes, sets and locations. Stylists spend painstaking time to recreate a snapshot of this bygone time, shopping thrift stores, hunting through antique markets, borrowing from private collections and creating replica clothing, furniture and props. With a little bit of ingenuity, a raid through a grandparent’s closet and some good costume props, you can create a Mad Men costume of your choice.

Imagine the ultra-cool you exude when you walk into the room as Don Draper, one of the partners of the fictional NYC ad agency. You just need a dark suit and a thin black tie to pull of the classic and dashing silhouette of this central character. Add some hair pomade and be sure to carry a silver cigarette lighter and glass half-filled with scotch.

Ladies will feel all Grace Kelly to dress up as his stunning, but icy-cold wife Betty Draper. Pay tribute to her former days as a model by dressing up in a retro evening gown and elbow-length gloves (for a client dinner, of course) or go for her sportier Mad Men costume, an equestrienne outfit. Don a wig if you don’t naturally have her coiffed, blonde hair.

Other Mad Men costumes for women include Peggy, the secretary turned copywriter with her own office (gasp!) who is known for her short brunette bangs and pony tail. To pull off her Mad Men costume, a plaid dress will give you the nice, conservative style she prefers. For the more va-va-va-voom ladies, dressing up as office manager, Joan Holloway, will help you make a very memorable entrance. Just wear a red wig and make sure your curvy figure is accentuated in all the right places!

Men can dress as agency big-wig and silver fox, Roger Sterling, motivated up-and-comer Pete Campbell, creative-type Paul Kinsey or several of the other guys in the office. The one common denominator is they all pretty much wear the same 60s suit in some color variation. Home Entertainment Theatre For Your Home

To add comfort and luxury in your home, try adding a home entertainment theatre. This will be a great substitute if you have no time to go out and watch movies. It is just like watching a movie with surround systems in the comforts of your own home. You can enhance the sound from your DVR or DVD by connecting an audio from the system to an A/V receiver or a home theatre system. You may connect the video directly to your television nevertheless; your theatre system could also support video connections.

A surround system does not only add louder music and movies to your home theatre, but it also immerses a viewer in the movie-watching experience. It has a system called multichannel that allows several speakers deliver a specific sound. As a result, you will feel in the middle of the action, and the reality of the movie is intensified.

The key to the best system is the set up. The excitement you feel in opening those boxes that contain your new system component usually turns into despair as you start to anticipate the assembly task ahead. There are some things you can do to get your home theatre system up and running sooner than possible. Bear in mind that installation is much an art as it is science, and that since you paid for it, then you and your family should enjoy it. Go with what sounds and looks right for you and the rest of the family.

Plan your installation properly. Be aware of the limitations of the room and plan accordingly. A sunny, bright room with several windows may not be the best location for a projection TV. If there is no other room, you can put blinds, drapes or shutters to shield out sunlight. Plan on where to place your system to allow placing the surround wires along the baseboard walls. Consider wall mounting the speakers to avoid them being knocked over. Find out the weight of the speakers and make sure that the mounts could handle more than the speaker weight by fifteen percent. Ensure that the mounts are securely held in the walls.

The surround system has at least five speakers and an optional subwoofer and receiver. All the components must be wired through the receiver, and install all the speakers in the best positions in your living room or anywhere you will be watching movies.

All TV DVRs have white and red stereo audio output jacks. You can use the red and white ends of the system to connect to one of the stereo audio inputs in your home theatre system or A/V receiver. Remember to turn on your theatre system and choose the right input when watching shows.

Some TiVo DVRs have optical digital audio outputs. If your home entertainment theatre supports digital audio, you can use optical digital cable, which is sold separately to connect your TiVo DVR to the optical digital audio on your theatre system.

If your home theatre system supports video connections, use the yellow end of to connect video from your TiVo DVR to the video input jack on the system. For a better video quality, you can use an S-Video cable if the system supports it.

Above everything, take your time in installing your home entertainment theatre. A few moments could save you a lot of time undoing a mistake. You are going to have plenty of hours enjoying your system, so take some extra time to ensure that you do it right. This especially goes to measuring and running the speaker wires, setting up the cable wires behind the equipment. Each extra time spent in proper setting up of your home theatre will save you from hours of fixing later on.

Satellite TV Online

In the last decade, the battle between cable television and satellite television has only gotten stronger. Now, with the nearly-imminent switch to purely digital TV, perhaps a slight re-examination is in order.

Satellite TV would seem to have the edge, being a digital medium from its base, while cable has had to adapt increasingly. In short, cable is becoming more like satellite. Both offer high-quality digital images, both offer any number of bonuses, such as digital recording devices (think TiVo), different packages from basic to premium, priced to suit various budgets, etc.

Speaking from personal experience, I find that cable and satellite TV have their strong points. But I also know what most of you know: convenience is vital. If you’re like me at all, you don’t want to have to mess around with a lot of complicated set-ups. Let’s take installation for example. The cable company supplies a bulky device that I have to go to the cable company and get and set up myself because I find the company’s delivery and labor fees ridiculous. That leaves me to install it myself. That involves considerable work: having to set it up gingerly (because electronics can be fragile; always good to play it safe), knowing which cord plugs into which receiver, and so on. And I have to do it with about six inches of clearance between the television set and the wall. And I consider myself lucky, because I know how to do all of that. There are people out there who don’t know the first thing about setting up a home entertainment system.

The satellite companies, DishNetwork being one of them, more often than not, offer free installation. That means that once you make your decision, a qualified technician from the company comes to your home and sets it up for you at no extra cost. The most it will take is an hour, and thanks to modern technology, you really don’t have to worry about losing the signal during rainstorms or other nasty weather. Those considerations are a thing of the past. Once the set up is complete, you are good to go.

Getting a program on demand is another consideration. When I order pay-per-view with the cable company, most of the time it’s not as simple as advertised. Eight times out of ten, I can’t get it because of some reason I know nothing about. I never had that problem with the satellite company. Press, watch, good night.

So with the coming digital revolution, I suggest you get out there and do your research. It works for me, so anyone can do it.

Most Middle Class Americans Are Slaves!

I know it sounds harsh, unrealistic. How could that be? We have cars, nice houses, computers, TIVO, etc.

Yes, but isn’t it curious that 95% of us reaching retirement age are unable to retire, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics? How is that we can end up with little to no money after “slaving” for 40 years?

Step back and take a look at your life through the lenses of someone just arriving from outer space. See how different your situation looks:

You work for The Man.

You are in debt to The Man

The Man owns most of your possessions

The Man controls your life

In the old days, as now; The Man fed, clothed and housed his slaves in return for their labor. Although you are no longer controlled by iron chains, you are now controlled by a pay check.

The Man pays you just enough to meet your basic necessities with a JOB, (Just Over Broke!) but you probably do not have enough pay to get ahead financially. It barely lasts from one pay day to the next.

Has your family been able to accumulate even $5,000 cash in the bank?

That means if you are of no more use to The Man or you displease him, you will be out of a job and financially ruined in a few short months, if you can’t find another job. Starting to see what I mean?

Your wonderful lifestyle of eating out regularly, sending your children to good schools, going on vacation, wearing fine clothes, driving nice cars, etc. is dependent upon The Man. You really don’t own most of those houses, cars, plasma TV’s, etc that you think you do.

Don’t believe it? Try not paying your real estate taxes, your credit card bills or other loans and you will see what I mean. If you really owned them, The Man could not take them away from you. He actually owns them.

You are in debt to The Man for nearly all of your possessions and the Bible agrees with my assessment of the situation. It says that the “debtor is the slave of the creditor!” By taxing you and keeping you in debt, He not only controls you, he basically sucks the very labor and life out of you, which is His goal.

The Man, in the form of taxes and debts, takes the lion’s share of your income before you even get it. Sort of like a shell game; now you see it, now you don’t. And you, like most slaves, accept your treatment as normal, Gross Pay and Net Pay, The Man calls it.

Did you realize that you, like the average American, typically have to work from 9AM to nearly 2 in the afternoon, just to make enough money to pay your taxes and your debts for that day?

Is your actual status of a slave becoming clearer now? Virtually everything you have or do is controlled by The Man because he controls your income.

EZ monthly payments bleed you and your family to death like so many paper cuts. He sucks up that blood, drop by drop, becoming fatter and fatter off you.

When you cannot work anymore, you are left to condemned to poverty, as are most non-working seniors. Did you know that it is estimated that 25% of the pet food in this country is consumed by seniors? Fancy Feast, anyone?

Have you noticed how many older people you are seeing working in fast food outlets, Wal-Marts, the super markets? Do you think they are there because they “like People?”

No, they are just like the old, tired and sick slaves you read about. They can no longer work in the fields and have no assets to fall back on to provide them with income, so they are fed scraps.

The ball is in your court, now that you know the game.

If you think you will enjoy retirement under the Golden Arches, you can decide to do nothing and keep heading for the scrap heap.

Or you can do something to change course and change your future by getting control of your life by legally slashing your taxes, eliminating your consumer debts and investing now to accumulate income producing assets, then and only then will you break your chains.

I know I have painted a disturbing picture of life for Americans here in the richest country in the world, but it is a realistic one; ask the next retired senior you see working at the mall, you will see what I mean.

Digital Video Recorder

A digital video recorder (DVR) (or personal video recorder (PVR)) is a device that records video without videotape to a hard drive-based digital storage medium. The term includes stand-alone set-top boxes and software for personal computers which enables video capture and playback to and from disk.

History

The first DVR was tested on July 8, 1965, when CBS explored the possibilities of instant freeze-frame and rewind for sporting event broadcasts. Ampex released the first commercial hard disk video recorder in 1967. The HS-100 recorded analog video onto a digital hard disk and could store a maximum of only 30 seconds.

Hard disk-based DVRs

The two early consumer DVRs, ReplayTV and TiVo, were launched at the 1999 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Although ReplayTV won the “Best of Show” award in the video category, it was TiVo that went on to much greater commercial success. The devices have steadily developed complementary abilities, such as recording onto DVDs, commercial skip, sharing of recordings over the Internet, and programming and remote control facilities using PDAs, networked PCs, or Web browsers.

This makes the “time shifting” feature (traditionally done by a VCR) much more convenient, and also allows for “trick modes” such as pausing live TV, instant replay of interesting scenes, and skipping advertising. Most DVRs use the MPEG format for encoding analog video signals.

The two consumer DVR brands in the United States are the TiVo and DNNA’s ReplayTV. In the UK TiVo has a small presence; Thomson, Topfield, Fusion, Pace and Humax also supply digital terrestrial (DTT) DVRs. BSkyB markets a popular combined EPG and DVR as Sky+.South African based Africa Satellite TV beamer Multichoice recently launched their PVR which is available on their Dstv platform.

Many satellite and cable companies are incorporating DVR functions into their set-top box, such as with DirecTiVo, DishPlayer/DishDVR, Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8xxx, Motorola 6xxx from Comcast, Moxi Media Center by Digeo (available through Charter, Adelphia, Sunflower, Bend Broadband, and soon Comcast and other cable companies), or Sky+. In this case there is no encoding necessary in the DVR, as the satellite signal is already a digitally encoded MPEG stream. The DVR simply stores the digital stream directly to disk. Having the broadcaster involved with (subsidizing) the design of the DVR–and directly recording encrypted digital streams–can lead to features such as the ability to use interactive TV on recorded shows, pre-loading of programs. It can, however, also force the manufacturer to implement non-skippable advertisements and automatically-expiring recordings.

Software is available for transferring programs recorded on DVR hardware to or from PC’s (e.g., TiVoToGo and DVArchive).

PCs

Software and hardware is available which can turn personal computers running Microsoft Windows, Linux and Macintosh into PVRs, and is a popular option for home-theater PC (HTPC) enthusiasts.

Commercial Linux version available from SageTV based on Gentoo Linux. Brightbox, a consumer electronics device, uses SageTV.

Macintosh

Elgato makes a series of DVR devices called EyeTV (400 / 500 / DTT etc.). The software supplied with each device (but available separately) is also called EyeTV. Elgato have recently released version 2.3 of their EyeTV software, with a redesigned interface, better program guide (built into the program) and a ‘One Click’ to iPod video feature. Miglia also makes DVR hardware that runs the EyeTV software, as well as DVR devices that use other software.

Other DVR products include myTV.PVR from EskapeLabs and ConvertX PVR from Plextor. MythTV (see above) also runs under OS X, but most recording devices are currently only supported under Linux. Precompiled binaries are available for the MythTV front-end, allowing a Mac to watch video from (and control) a MythTV server running under Linux.

Apple provides applications in the FireWire software developer kit which allow any Macintosh with a FireWire port to record the MPEG2 transport stream from a FireWire equipped cable box (e.g., Motorola 62xx, including HD streams). Applications can also change channels on the cable box via the firewire interface. Only broadcast channels can be recorded as the rest of the channels are encrypted. iRecord is a free scheduled-recording program derived from this SDK.

Windows

Microsoft Windows has several free DVR applications including GB-PVR, Got All Media and MediaPortal. DScaler has also DVR support in works.

There also are several proprietary applications including SageTV, SnapStream Beyond TV, ChrisTV, Showshifter, Meedio (now a dead product – Yahoo! bought most of the company’s technology and discontinued the Meedio line, and rebranding the software Yahoo! Go – TV, which is now a free product), InterVideo WinDVR, Recordit Plus and the R5000-HD.

There is also a separate version of Microsoft Windows called Windows XP Media Center Edition which has DVR capabilities.

And Microsoft Windows Vista will include in its standard version the Media Center functionalities.

Source video

Television and video are terms that are sometimes used interchangeably, but differ in their technical definitions. Video is the visual portion of television, whereas television is the combination of video and audio modulated onto a carrier frequency (i.e., a television channel), so that multiple frequencies (i.e., multiple channels) may be transmitted at the same time.

Analog television

Analog television in NTSC, PAL or SECAM formats, analog cable, or regular VHS tapes use a signal that is fed directly to the electron beam within the television set. There are a number of details on how this is done, but in essence each line in each frame corresponds to a specific fraction of time within the signal.

To record an analog signal a few steps are required. A TV tuner card tunes into a particular frequency and then functions as a frame grabber, breaking the lines into individual pixels and quantizing them into a format that a computer can comprehend. Then the series of frames along with the audio (also sampled and quantized) are compressed into a manageable format, like MPEG-2, or WMF, usually in software. Some TV tuner cards like the DVR-250/350 or the TiVo chip deliver an MPEG-2 or other compressed stream directly to the computer, performing both the frame grabbing and compression in silico. This greatly reduces the load on the CPU allowing an overall cheaper implementation.

Analog Broadcast Copy Protection

Many mass-produced consumer DVRs implement a copy-protection system called CGMS-A (Copy Generation Management System–Analog). This encodes a pair of bits in the VBI of the analog video signal that specify one of the following settings:

Copying is freely allowed

Copying is prohibited

Only one copy of this material may be made

This is a copy of material for which only one copy was allowed to be made, so no further copies are allowed.

CGMS-A information may be present in analog broadcast TV signals, and is preserved when the signal is recorded and played back by analog VCRs, which of course don’t understand the meanings of the bits. But the restrictions still come into effect when you try to copy the tape onto a Player.

Digital television

Digital television is audio/visual signals that are broadcast over the air in a digital rather than analog format. Recording digital TV is generally a straightforward capture of the binary MPEG-2 data being received. No expensive hardware is required to quantize and compress the signal (as the television broadcaster has already done this in the studio). The MythTV DVR supports both international DVB signals and American ATSC signals while the HDTV Tivo supports only the ATSC signals. In the U.S., the FCC attempted to place a road-block before digital DVRs with its “Broadcast flag” regulation. Digital video recorders which had not won prior approval from the FCC for implementing “effective” digital rights management would have been banned from interstate commerce as of July 2005. The regulation was struck down on May 6, 2005.

DVD-based PVRs available on the market as of 2006 are not capable of capturing the full range of the visual signal available with high definition television (HDTV). This is largely because HDTV standards were finalized at a later time than the standards for DVDs. However, DVD-based PVRs can still be used (albeit at reduced visual quality) with HDTV since currently available HDTV sets also have standard A/V connections.

Satellite or Digital Cable

Recording satellite or digital cable signals on a digital video recorder is more complex than recording analog signals or broadcast digital signals. This is so because the MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 stream is usually encrypted to prevent people from viewing the content without paying for it (usually via subscription).

The satellite or cable set-top box does two things. First, it decrypts the signal. Second, it decodes the MPEG stream into an analog, DVI, or HDMI signal for viewing on the television. In order to record cable/satellite digital signals you must get the signal after it is decrypted, but before it is decoded (between steps one and two); this is how DVRs built into set-top boxes work.

An alternative is that some satellite or (more commonly) cable set-top boxes have a FireWire port that can be connected to a computer. The recorded MPEG stream can be relayed to the computer via this FireWire port; though it can be done live, this is more commonly used for transferring shows from a set-top box with built-in DVR. DVD

Many DVD-based DVRs are equipped with two DVD drives or an additional internal hard drive. This arrangement can be used to copy content from a source DVD, which is disallowed in the US under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act if the disc is encrypted. Most such DVRs will hence not allow recording of video streams from encrypted movie discs.

Digital camcorders

Some DVD-based DVRs incorporate a Firewire connector which can be used to capture digital video from a MiniDV or Digital 8 camcorder, possibly recording a simple DVD as the camcorder is played back. Some editing of the resulting DVD is usually possible, such as adding chapter points.

Security applications

Digital video recorders configured for physical security applications record video signals from closed circuit television cameras for detection and documentation purposes. Many are designed to record audio as well. DVRs have evolved into devices that are feature rich and provide services that exceed the simple recording of video images that was previously done through VCRs. A DVR CCTV system provides a multitude of advanced functions over VCR technology including video searches by event, time, date and camera. There is also much more control over quality and frame rate allowing disk space usage to be optimized and the DVR can also be set to overwrite the oldest security footage should the disk become full. In some DVR security systems remote access to security footage using a PC can also be achieved by connecting the DVR to a LAN network or the internet.

Security DVRs may be categorized as being either PC based or embedded. A PC based DVR’s architecture is a classical personal computer with video capture cards designed to capture video images. An embedded type DVR is specifically designed as a digital video recorder with its operating system and application software contained in firmware or read only memory.

Hardware Features

Hardware features of security DVRs vary between manufacturers and may include but are not necessarily limited to:

Designed for rack mounting or desktop configurations.

Single or multiple video inputs with connector types consistent with the analogue or digital video provided such as coaxial cable, twisted pair or optical fiber cable. The most common number of inputs are 1, 4, 8, 16 and 32. Systems may be configured with a very large number of inputs by networking or bussing individual DVRs together.

Looping video outputs for each input which duplicates the corresponding input video signal and connector type. These output signals are used by other video equipment such as matrix switchers, multiplexers, and video monitors.

Controlled outputs to external video display monitors.

Front panel switches and indicators that allow the various features of the machine to be controlled.

Network connections consistent with the network type and utilized to control features of the recorder and to send and/or receive video signals.

Connections to external control devices such as keyboards.

A connection to external pan-tilt-zoom drives that position cameras.

Internal CD, DVD, VCR devices typically for archiving video.

Connections to external storage media.

Alarm event inputs from external security detection devices, usually one per video input.

Alarm event outputs from internal detection features such as motion detection or loss of video.

Software Features

Software features vary between manufacturers and may include but are not necessarily limited to:

User selectable image capture rates either on an all input basis or input by input basis. The capture rate feature may be programmed to automatically adjust the capture rate on the occurrence of an external alarm or an internal event

Selectable image resolution either on an all input basis or input by input basis. The image resolution feature may be programmed to automatically adjust the image resolution on the occurrence of an external alarm or an internal event.

Motion detection: Provided on an input by input basis, this feature detects motion detection in the total image or a user definable portion of the image and usually provides sensitivity settings. Detection causes an internal event that may be output to external equipment and/or be used to trigger changes in other internal features.

Lack of motion detection. Provided on an input by input basis, this feature detects the movement of an object into the field of view and remaining still for a user definable time. Detection causes an internal event that may be output to external equipment and/or used to trigger changes in other internal features.

Direction of motion detection. Provided on an input by input basis, this feature detects the direction of motion in the image that has been determined by the user as an unacceptable occurrence. Detection causes an internal event that may be output to external equipment and/or be used to trigger changes in other internal features.

Routing of input video to video monitors based on user inputs or automatically on alarms or events.

Input, time and date stamping.

Alarm and event logging on appropriate video inputs.

Alarm and event search.

One or more sound recording channels.

Archival.

Remote control.

Hot Battle For Viewership Between Comcast And Verizon Cable Vs Satellite Directv And The Dish

The battle for ultrasharp, high-definition channels that gobbles up bandwidth is in full swing. DirecTV satellite broadcaster announced recently that they plan to offer 100 high definition format channels to their lineup. At this juncture they have 20 high definition channels.

The largest cable company (Comcast cable TV) is spending 5.7 billion dollars on upgrades. By integrating all their services for phone, computer and TV in a digital format, they seek total domination for any given household. The “triple play” consists of a bundle of TV, speedy Internet access and digital (VOIP) phone service.

Cable TV providers need to increase their high-definition network capacity to stay competitive. Their plan is to add more HD channels as well as high-definition movies-on-demand. The high-cost upgrades are necessary to keep up with surging bandwidth demands and rapid growth of Internet video.

Comcast has the largest footprint in the cable industry. According to Comcast, their cable wiring passes 47.4 million U.S. households. Out of those only 11.5 uses their Internet services and 24.2 million their video services.

Verizon is also in the battle-front for fiber-optic services and plans to spend $23 billion to rewire residential areas. Verizon project a huge increase in Internet customers and TV subscribers as the upgrade’s progress. This is good news for the consumer in that more competition should spell better competitive prices for individual and bundled services.

Unfortunate for many local customers, Verizon will not prioritize expenditures in areas where Comcast already competes and will concentrate on rewiring areas that promise higher returns to their bottom line. Verizon overlaps about one-third of Comcast’s service area.

DirecTV the world-leading provider of digital television entertainment, satellite-based private business networks, and global video and data broadcasting to more than 15.5 million customers, is also beefing up their services. They already have hundreds of channels of digital-quality video pictures and CD-quality audio programming. DirecTV signals are transmitted via high-powered geosynchronous satellites. With the planned launch of two additional dedicated HD satellites next year, DirecTV is poised to offer even more ultra-sharp HD programming.

In the coming months, look for video-on-demand, a gaming lounge and software that enables your television to interact with your personal computer. With new upgrades, in a few more months, 97% of U.S. households will be able to access DirectTV and 70% HD high-definition local channels.

The digital video recording arena is also heating up. EchoStar Dish TV has said it devised its own on-demand TV recording technology for its Dish Network satellite TV customers. TiVo has sued EchoStar for patent infringement violation. TiVo digital video recorders have 2 million DirecTV satellite television customers and has agreed to provide services to rival Comcast cable TV.

As the segment of homes with HD televisions grows and advances in interactivity with one’s personal computer complement the entire spectrum for home electronics, the battle for bandwidth and providers heat up. More competition between providers will give the consumer better technology, better choices and hopefully, lower prices.
