Google Tech Talk April 9, 2009 ABSTRACT “Reflections on the 50th Anniversary of NASA: The Giants on Whose Shoulders We Stood” Why explore? Among the many reasons, we explore because it fuels a useful scientific and technological foundation that enables a flourishing economy. Taking humans to the edge of their known world both requires new technology, and returns radical new insights into the world. Without exploration, science and engineering became routine and uninteresting. The NASA Ames Research Center, which is nearly 70 years old, has contributed scientific and engineering expertise to the exploration missions at the heart of NASA over its 50 year history. Ames has made major contributions to the manned and unmanned space programs, including Mercury, Gemini and Apollo, the Space Shuttle, aeronautics, lunar science, planetary exploration, Mars, and the prospects of life in the universe. Ames’ most significant contribution to science and technology, though, has been in developing the careers of masterful researchers. This presentation will emphasize the aerospace giants who fundamentally shaped the history of NASA Ames. Presented by John W. Boyd: John W. Seine Exzellenz George Washington: Eine Biographie sehr gut gemachte Biografie – F. Kluge – Wolfenbüttel
Ich kann mich meinen Vorrezensenten nur anschließen! Dieses ist eine sehr gut gemachte Biografie über den ersten Präsidenten der USA George Washington. Ich kann dieses Buch nur jedem ans Herz legen, der sich für amerikanische Geschichte interessiert! Der Autor hat in seiner Biografie nicht nur den Menschen G.W. charakterisiert, sondern auch die geschichtlichen Zusammenhänge, die in der Zeit herrschten, sehr gut herausgearbeitet und dargestellt.
Gute und lesenswerte Biographie – –
Die Gründungsphase der USA gehört sicher zu den interessantesten Themen der neuzeitlichen Geschichtsschreibung. Namen wie Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Hamilton, Adams und andere kennt auch der deutsche interessierte Laie. Washington, Führer der Kontinentalarmee und erster Präsident der USA ist unter diesen Figuren die wichtigste. Ellis gelingt es zu zeigen, wie Washington in diese dominante Rolle hineinwächst. Als Verkörperung der Nation im Unabhängigkeitkrieg, während dessen er die einzige gemeinsame Konstante ist, wird er für die junge Nation unersetzbar. Dabei gelingt es Ellis zu verdeutlichen, dass Washington trotz vieler Fähigkeiten auch Schwächen hatte. Washington ist ein Mythos und er hat selbst an diesem Mythos gearbeitet. Ellis gelingt es, ein wenig hinter die Fassade zu schauen.
Negativ anzumerken ist, dass Ellis offensichtlich fürs amerikanische Publikum geschrieben hat. Einige Andeutungen besonders auf Heldengeschichten, die in den USA offenbar jedem Schulkind bekannt sind, sind ohne diesen Hintergrund nicht zu verstehen. Insgesamt kann man aber auch als Neuling auf dem Gebiet der frühen amerikanischen Geschichte mit dieser Biographie viel anfangen und einiges Lernen, zumal das Buch angenehm zu lesen ist.
: Sein Konterfei ziert bis heute jeden Dollarschein, er steht mit seinem Namen Pate für einen Staat und für die Hauptstadt der USA, wo unzählige Büsten und Gemälde an ihn erinnern: George Washington, erster Präsident der Vereinigten Staaten und Inbegriff der Einheit der amerikanischen Nation. Ihm hat Joseph J. Ellis, der für seine Sammelbiografie über die amerikanischen Gründerväter Sie schufen Amerika mit dem Pulitzer-Preis ausgezeichnet wurde, nun eine eigene biografische Arbeit gewidmet. Nach deren Lektüre muss man Washington zwar nicht mögen, aber seine strikt an der historischen und sozialen Realität seiner Zeit und den Gesetzen der Macht orientierte Politik lehrt sie uns ebenso besser verstehen, wie die Bewunderung, die die Amerikaner ihm bis heute entgegenbringen.

Die Zwiespältigkeiten im Charakter des Mannes, der in seinen beiden Amtszeiten den amerikanischen Präsidentialismus so maßgebend und nachhaltig prägte, lassen sich freilich nicht ohne weiteres auflösen! So tut man sich schwer zu verstehen, dass ausgerechnet er, der die Sklaverei als moralisch verwerflich erkannte, seine Sklaven wieder an die Arbeit in den Plantagen schickte, nachdem sie auf den Schlachtfeldern die amerikanische Unabhängigkeit mit erstritten hatten. Sein offen zur Schau gestellter Standesdünkel und seine schier unstillbare Gier auf Grundbesitz machen ihn auch nicht unbedingt sympathischer. Und seine legendäre stoische Ruhe und “statuengleiche Unerschütterlichkeit” stehen bei näherem Hinsehen in einem bemerkenswerten Kontrast zu den in ihm in Wirklichkeit brodelnden Leidenschaften, die, wie Robert Morris einmal bemerkte, “fast zu gewaltig waren für einen Menschen”, die er aber um der Macht willen doch zu zügeln verstand.

“Letztlich”, lautet das Fazit des Autors, “hatte sein ganzes Leben mit Macht zu tun: damit, sich ihr entgegenzustellen, sie zu zähmen, zu kanalisieren und zu entfalten. Sein bemerkenswert verläßliches Urteil rührte daher, daß er ein elementares Verständnis dafür hatte, wie Macht in der Welt funktioniert.” Auch darüber erfährt man deshalb aus Ellis’ recht unterhaltsamer Lebenserzählung eine ganze Menge. — Hasso Greb
