Set in one of the most spectacular locations in Europe, beneath the towering North Wall of the Eiger, Grindelwald is a veritable paradise for the walker. Trails lead off through pine scented valleys leading the way to airy summits and high mountain tarns surrounded by the rugged beauty of the Jungfrau Region of the Swiss Alps.
The walking and hiking opportunities to be had here seem almost limitless but I’ll detail 3 of my favorite routes, each of which are suitable for the average walker new to the Alps being neither excessively long or containing any difficult sections.
The Grindelwald Valley or Lutschental, being Swiss, is served by the best public transport system in the World with most visitors arriving from Interlaken by the small red and white trains of the Berner Oberland Bahn. All the main walking routes of the valley can also easily be reached by train, bus or cable car so there’s no need for a car. For those who insist on polluting the place though, you can drive up the valley if you need to – it’s not traffic free like Zermatt and Saas Fee.
I’ll start then with a route that’s suitable to start off a walking trip – one to do with the kids or on the afternoon you arrive. Take the cable car up to Mannlichen to the West of Grindelwald and first of all follow the wide track up to the summit known as Mannlichen Gipfel at 2343m or 7687 feet. The summit is only about 100m above the cable car station and the view it gives is well worth the small effort involved. The far side drops steeply away though so care is needed if children are with you – the path to it is wide and easy. Now retrace your steps back past the cable car and follow the wide trail signposted to Kleine Scheidegg towards a view that you will have seen on countless postcards and calendars in Grindelwald’s shops.
The 3 summits of the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau rise in a line ahead and it is towards these snowy peaks that the path winds its leisurely way. There is absolutely no difficulty in either the walking or route finding as the path leads in a gentle and slightly downhill manner past the steep grassy Lauberhorn – famous for the downhill ski race – and around a wide circle in the hills always with wonderful views to finish at the resort of Kleine Scheidegg. The village is best known as the base for attempts on the Eiger North Face and featured in Clint Eastwood’s movie, The Eiger Sanction. Kleine Scheidegg is usually busy but it is worth a visit and it is from here that you can catch the train – part of the Jungfrau Railway – back down to Grindelwald. This walk is only 5km or 3 miles and involves very little ascent – around 100m – it is entirely downhill if Mannlichen Gipfel is not ascended.
Our second walk is a classic day hike of the Alps. The Eigertrail or Eiger Trail begins at Alpiglen below Kleine Scheidegg which is reached by mountain railway from Grindelwald via Grund just below in the valley. The route is signposted from the Alpiglen Station which is a request stop on the Jungfrau Railway.
A fabulous path with wide views northward leaves the station to cross alpine meadows before entering a small forest. A little steep section with a handrail leads back up to more open country before you branch off over a small footbridge over a ravine. Now the path climbs more steeply towards the North Face of the Eiger which fills the sky to the South and doubles back towards Kleine Scheidegg and Eigergletscher climbing all the time.
The route crosses increasingly wild looking terrain as it gets higher and provides close up views of the wall above which is almost 6000 feet high. After a slight descent the route passes a number of cairns and traverses beneath the sheer rocks of the Rotstock before suddenly emerging at Eigergletscher where they serve a good meal in the staton restaurant – or walk up the ridge past the old Mitteleggi Hut where there’s a seat below the rocks with views across the Lauterbrunnen Valley. A good place to eat a packed lunch!
The Eiger Trail leads through some spectacular scenery with great views throughout but is never difficult. The maximum height is Eigergletscher at 2320m or 7612 feet and the route involves about 700m of ascent over 5km or 3 miles. To return take the train from Eigergletscher or Kleine Scheidegg another 3km and about 300m downhill. This route can also be done in the reverse direction for those with an aversion to walking uphill. This is of course much easier and just as spectacular.
My last route here is the ascent of the Faulhorn – an easy trekking peak north of Grindelwald. Take the cablecar from the village main street to First which is a viewpoint in the range to the North. From First at 2167m – a grassy balcony from which to view the array of rock and ice opposite – a network of trails leads through expanses of alpine meadows where the sound of cowbells is never far away. Follow the wide easy path signposted to Bachsee and Faulhorn and after a surprisingly short ascent you will arrive at Bachsee with its stunning views across the valley to the snows of the high Oberland Peaks.
From Bachsee the path climbs more steeply below the dark crags of the Simelihorn to the high col of Gassenboden – a contrast to the lush meadows below. The Faulhorn is clearly visible from here with the last section of the path leading up to the hut just below the summit. At 2681m or 8796 feet the Faulhorn gives far ranging views – the blue waters of the Brienzersee glisten 7000 feet below to the North while beyond are the Alpine foothills and the distant lowlands. Southwards the whole of the Jungfrau Region is on display with the glaciers and crags rising massively across the Grindelwald valley.
You can descend the same way but a good route is to return to Gassenboden and head to the right down the trail to Bussalp – a rougher but still not difficult path that descends through a wonderful unspoiled and craggy valley which shows a much wilder side of these mountains than the meadows of First. The total distance of this route is 9km or 6 miles with 520m of ascent and 900m of descent if the path to Bussalp is followed. From Bussalp there is a regular bus service – there had to be really – to Grindelwald.

Women’s Ski Pants – How To Choose The Best Ski Pants For Women

Image : http://www.flickr.com
In all of the best women’s ski pants, function and fashion are combined in the most optimal manner possible. Function always takes precedence as it is important to keep warm, dry and protected from the snow, rocks and possible accidents while on the slopes. Fashion is secondary especially as looking good on the slopes often means actually skiing well.
Here are the top five ski pants for women. You will notice that these are fitted to the unique feminine shape in a variety of cuts for equally unique preferences.
First, the Arcteryx Women’s Alpha LT Pants are made from relatively lightweight but extremely durable fabric. As such, it delivers optimal protection against the natural elements on the slope with as minimal fuss as possible – just what a true alpinist desires in pants. It may not have the bells and whistles associated with fashionable ski pants but every pair of the Alpha LT pants have full-length side zippers that allow for fast, easy and convenient layering. Keep in mind that women’s pants, like the rest of ski clothes, must be layered in at least 2 layers for basic protection while 3 layers is the standard.
Then there’s the the Fera Queenie pants, which provides for a contemporary fit thanks to its low-rise construction. You can choose from two colors – black and chalk – for better pairing with your other ski clothes. You will feel comfortable zipping down the mountain or strolling through Aspen’s Main Street in these comfortable but still fashionable pants with streamlined cargo pockets, V-shaped waistband and double belt loops.
The North Face Cirque pants are suitable for either floating through the powdery slopes or throwing airs in the neighborhood park. You will love its comfort fit, insulated fabrics and functional pockets. With its Heatseeker insulation, you will be protected from the cold while its thigh vents cant let off heat when the permits it – an excellent combination of regulating heat and cold not often seen in inferior women’s pants.
You will find that the Salomon Snowtrip pants may be softshell pants but function is never sacrificed in favor of its fashionably sleek silhouette. The special fabric makes for complete waterproof capability while still providing for the benefit of breathability, which makes these ski pants one of the best in its price range. You can use these pants for a variety of snow activities like skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing, all of which the Salomon Snowtrip pants will definitely stand up to the physical demands.
Last but not least, the North Face Women’s Freedom Insulated pants provide for great insulation against the cold but also provide for strategic vents to ensure that the wearer does not overheat. Your knees will be comfortably and safely encased in the articulated knee construction while the cargo pocket provides space to carry essential things with you on the slopes.
Indeed, the abovementioned women’s ski pants are the best in their categories. Because you will be hard-pressed to choose which one is the most suitable for your needs, we suggest just buying them one at a time when your budget permits. It also helps to look through other choices from other brands.

Overseas Factories & Counterfeit Goods

Image : http://www.flickr.com
China – the world’s biggest factory. It makes just about everything, from car parts to medicines. It sells most of its products wholesale, which accounts for their vastly slashed prices. Take a North Face bag for instance. It comes cheap since it was bought on wholesale price.
But is that really the only reason why it comes at such a bargain price?
The answer is no. Branded goods like that are most likely fakes. And these fakes are made with minimal quality control, shoddy workmanship, and substandard materials. Unfortunately, China has taken to churning out knockoffs that most of the world import into their own shores. It has gotten to the point of actually crowding out original goods and thus dominating the market. It supplies the demand made by mid to low income earners who also aspire to tote designer goods that are copies of the latest in the market today. Upon closer inspection, however, it is found out that only the labels are genuine, the rest is fake.
The counterfeit goods do not stop there; you would also find pirated films, software, auto parts, light bulbs, batteries, soaps, shampoos, perfumes, cosmetics, medicines… the sky is the limit. You would find that the pirated DVD’s are practically as good as the genuine ones, and that the software works just as well as the original. But the auto parts can be undoubtedly a cause for so-called accidents, and that the light bulbs and batteries only last for a few days. How about getting a rash from a bar of soap or suffering from extreme hair shedding caused by counterfeit shampoo?
Nothing beats breaking out in hives upon application of your tinted moisturizer with SPF 15 or suffering from a stroke upon swallowing a dose of fake Viagra. There are consumers who are fully aware of these but are willing to take the risk anyway. But sadly, there are also those who are unwittingly duped into buying counterfeit items and could only wonder at their adverse effects.
The Chinese government takes measures to stop this, certainly, but it is usually for the benefit of news cameras. The hesitation to put a complete stop to the counterfeiting business stems from the fact that it would endanger the jobs of the millions of people employed at such factories.
It would take a complete change in mindset to put a stop to the manufacture of counterfeit goods. Only when the demand for fake items stop, that is the only time when its production screeches to a halt as well.

Mount St. Helens is a National Monument

Image : http://www.flickr.com
In December 2005, Manaro, the volcano in the Pacific Island nation of Vanuatu showed signs it was about to erupt. Smoke and ashes shot up from the crater and many of the population fled their homes. In point of fact the volcano did not erupt. However, as the old year came to an end and we entered a new one, news flashed around the world that the South Pacific had experienced a large earthquake. Could there, I wonder, be a connection?
Mount St. Helens, located in the Washington State in the Pacific Northwest, also a volcano, [http://www.northwesttravelspots.com%20] erupted in May 1980. The eruption is attributed to an earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale. Certainly, this was not the first time this mountain had outbelched larva, smoke and ash in its 50,000 history of eruption. This time the north face collapsed in a gigantic avalanche of sand, rock and larva, taking with it 230 square miles of verdant forest. The volcano spewed a mushroom cloud high into the sky that turned day into night and scattered gray ash over most of eastern Washington State and the surrounding area. The eruption itself lasted a mere nine hours but the affects felt as far away as Canada, have changed the area out of all recognition. It was as if an atom bomb had exploded in the area on that day almost 26 years ago.
In 1982, President Reagan and Congress voted to create 110,00 acre National Volcanic Monument not only to mark the events of that fateful day in May 1980, but also to take from what was described as a national disaster and turn something negative into a positive creation. Within the Park that comprises the Monument the land is left alone to recover from the shattering disturbance it had experienced. Slowly and without the help of man the area is beginning to return to life. The once gray, larva strewn terrain is now gently turning green as plants and shrubs take root within the ash and debris. Bird life, which deserted the area after the eruption, is now coming back and the elk that lived and grazed within the surrounding forest are now straying back to what was once their natural habitat. Who says these creatures do not have instinctual memory?
For the traveler who remembers the graphic TV pictures of the Mount St. Helen’s disaster a trip to the National Monument will help restore faith in the notion that no matter what happens, it will pass and life will move on to its next mighty stage of growth and development.

How to Decide Which Clothes to Bring With You to College

Image : http://www.flickr.com
Suppose you’re about to make a pizza. You open the fridge and take out what you think you’ll need-pizza dough, a pound of pepperoni, a large bowl of mushrooms, and 8 cups of cheese.
Taking it all in, you suddenly realize that all of these ingredients will never fit on your 7-inch crust. You now are forced to make some difficult decisions: What will you use? What will you skip? And how will you arrange your ingredients so they won’t fall off into the oven and make a gooey mess?
Much like fitting a ton of ingredients onto a tiny pizza crust, packing clothes for college requires you to make some pretty difficult decisions. In both ca
ses, some basic principles apply that will help you make the right decisions.
Whether you share a room or have your own room in college, your space is probably smaller than what you have been used to. Not only that: this tiny room has to function as a bedroom, a study area, a living room, and a storage closet.
Living in these small rooms can affect your body, mind and spirit, leaving you feeling boxed in, restless and unfocused. When your small room is overcrowded with too much clothing, your physical movement is restricted and you may start to feel blocked from achieving your personal goals. However, with a little planning, and a little know-how, you can transform your college room into a comfortable place to sleep, study and hang out.
The amount of clothing you bring to your small room, where you put it and how you store it can create either a feeling of spaciousness or confinement. To feel more relaxed and comfortable in your college room, follow these two steps:
• Step 1: Bring only what you need, use, love and will fit
• Step 2: Have a place for everything
Step 1: Bring Only What You Need, Use, Love and Will Fit
Determine Your Storage Space
To ensure you bring clothing that fits in your new room, learn about the storage and floor space available to you before moving in. Get a floor plan, ask upper class students for advice, and/or take an online virtual tour of rooms or apartments in your building.
Note how many storage pieces there are for each student and measure or estimate the dimensions of the closet, bureau, shelves and desk. How many drawers are in each, and how big are they?
If you have no way to estimate the amount of storage space, plan on taking whatever will fit into a small bureau and narrow closet. After all, you can always bring in more items later if you discover you have enough room.
Determine What Clothing to Bring
As you plan what to bring, ask five questions about each item:
• Do I love it?
• Will I need it?
• Will I use it?
• Does it express who I am now, or who I want to become?
• Will it fit?
Be sure you can answer “yes” to the last question and to at least one of the other questions; otherwise, leave the clothes at home.
Next, separate what you know you will wear from what you think you might wear.
Place the clothing you’re unsure of into a box in your home bedroom and ask your parents to send it if you find you need them later.
There are various ways to ensure you’re bringing a balanced group of clothing with you to your new room. For instance, make decisions based on need and how often you want to do laundry: If you want or need more of one item, bring less of another.
The goal is to have a place for everything. If your storage space overflows, energy gets stuck there. Then energy in your brain gets stuck, creating confusion and slowing your thought processes.
Many students bring not just all their socks, but almost every item of clothing they own. In order to hold them all, they buy large plastic storage bins which are often crammed under a bed or stacked against the wall. Not only does the excess clothing take up valuable space, but the synthetic containers outgas toxins, also called volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which affect respiration. The more plastic in your building, the bigger the problem for everyone!
So what’s a viable alternative, you ask?
To avoid taking up precious space with storage containers, limit the clothing you bring with you. Make sure your clothing is appropriate for the climate, your planned activities, and your college culture.
Then observe the 100% Clothing Rule: only bring the clothing you are sure you’ll actually wear. Here’s a bonus: when you’re wearing clothes you feel comfortable in, you are more likely to feel authentically you! Again, if it’s something you might need but you’re not sure of, leave it in a convenient place at home, and have it shipped if you need it. There’s no point in having more pizza than you can eat, or more stuff than you can store!
If you do require extra storage, use containers made of fabric, cardboard or some other natural material.
Another reason to bring a small-size wardrobe to college is that once you get there, meet new people and have new experiences, you and your clothing style could change.
Set aside a clothing budget to purchase some signature items that are part of your college culture. At Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida, Jack Rogers sandals are popular foot wear, while at the University of Vermont, students wear Pategonia or Northface down vests!
Step 2: Have a Place for Everything
Store Small Items in Natural Storage Containers and Ottomans
When many small objects are scattered throughout your room, there is no place for the eye to rest, and that can make it hard to relax and focus. To remedy this, be sure you have a place for everything.
Bring baskets or natural storage containers (made from cardboard, rubber or bamboo) to store small items like belts and scarves. Know the dimensions of the shelves and horizontal surfaces in your room and think about what you’ll be storing before buying the containers.
Creative Closets
Although closets often have only a rod for hanging clothes, with a little bit of ingenuity, it’s possible to create more space for effective storage in almost any closet.
Closet Storage Tips
• Use the closet wall to hang flat items like jewelry and accessories.
• Hang shoe bags and sweater bags from the closet rod.
• Organize with storage containers, shoe racks and shelves.
Following these guidelines will be very helpful to you when you are deciding which clothes you should take with you when packing for college.
