Invasion of the Prostate Snatchers: No More Unnecessary Biopsies, Radical Treatment or Loss of Sexual Potency Important Book for Every Man – L.C. Evans – North Carolina, USA
Men need to do their homework about prostate cancer and this book is a great place to start.

One of the authors is a man with slow growing prostate cancer and the other is his open minded doctor. They alternate chapters throughout the book. Dr. Scholz takes care of writing about the medical side and Ralph Blum writes from the perspective of a patient with a mind of his own. Rather than immediately submit to life altering surgery or radiation, Blum did his homework. He was fortunate to find doctors who told him what he needed to know. Now, twenty years after he was first diagnosed, Blum is still regularly monitoring his cancer and living in good health. Though he is prepared to take steps if it should start to spread, that hasn’t been necessary. I especially liked that Blum tried some alternative treatments and wrote about these and how they might have affected his disease.

Although Dr. Scholz’s chapters were about the anatomy and physiology of the prostate and the details of available treatments as well as the pros and cons of each, they were every bit as interesting as his co-author’s chapters. He was fortunate enough to know men who’d undergone some of the conventional treatments and who were willing to share their stories. Some of those stories were almost nightmarish.

I came away with the thought that any man who is diagnosed with prostate cancer needs to know that in most cases there is no need to panic and rush into a life altering decision about treatment. People need to be responsible for their own bodies and make decisions they can live with. Watchful waiting is an option for those with the slow growing kind of prostate cancer. Sure, the disease still has to be monitored, but having a PSA test or an occasional biopsy seems a lot better than permanent impotence and incontinence. Or a lifelong case of painful rectal burns and fecal incontinence after radiation. Diagnostic tests and treatments are constantly evolving and improving. Make sure you–and your doctor–know the very latest.

I do appreciate the authors personal experience with prostate cancer and having being a doctor that has helped many people with this issue. However, when one learns they have cancer, I do not think many will heed the advice to the lower risk group to “deal with it”.

If people have cancer they want it out. Yes, removing the prostate affects your sexual performance and hampers your life. But you are alive. What is the old Bible saying, “It is better to be a living dog then a dead lion”.

I am not saying that all prostate cancers should be removed, but in the minds of many, they will want it out. It would be hard to convince or educate someone otherwise, even if other options are available. No one wants to continually monitor the progress of a cancer like it was diabetes. It is cancer.

Not sure many will find this convincing, even if he makes valid points.

As one who has experienced radiation seed implants as a treatment for prostate cancer and has been glad I made that choice, I’m probably not the most objective person to review this book. On the one hand, I agree with the authors that there are probably too many unnecessary prostate surgeries in this country, but on the other, there are also probably too many premature deaths from men who wait too long to take action. This book has the distinction of approaching the problem from both the doctor’s and the patient’s point of view. The authors express their perspectives in alternate chapters and while their conclusions are often qualified, the general thrust of the book is that less is more. This may or may not be so, depending on the individual case, but I’m afraid that the catchy commercial title as well as the bold subtitle (NO MORE UNNECESSARY BIOPSIES, RADICAL TREATMENT OR LOSS OF SEXUAL POTENCY) may discourage men who need treatment from seeking it. However, the book is lucid and well-written throughout, and if read carefully and with an open mind provides valuable information on the various options for the prostate patient. And the doctor/patient alternation is a model that more medical books should follow.
